CR is really fun...it's a great first surf trip & just a great place to go in general. been there 3x & never failed to score some really fun surf.
i spent a month in mal pais back in 2005 & i don't think the surf dropped below head high the entire time i was there. part of the time it was approaching DOH & we had to seek out more sheltered breaks b/c the main beachbreak was closing out.
hit up hermosa & nosara in 2002 & got some fun surf then, too...lots of fun breaks in the hermosa region & jaco is an interesting place to spend some time.
hit nosara again in 2007 & got some waves in the early days of the trip, but then i came down w/ a gnarly bug & was bedridden the rest of the trip. still, the first 3 days were really fun.

CR is nice b/c you can pretty much pack 1 board & be set for 90-95% of the conditions you'll find down there. only during the 2005 trip did i need or even wax the step-up i brought w/ me & even then it was only for a couple days. the other times i just rode my standard 6'4". it's a nice, simple surf trip that's pretty easy to plan & arrange. going in our summer months pretty much guarantees decent waves, too.

Been five times in the last ten years and scored great surf every trip.
I'm very worried that some of my favorite places will turn into the next Tamarindo!!!

    Try Nicaragua

You ought to give Nicaragua a try. Surfs just as good with the crowds you used to see in CR before everyone found out about it.

    March

Personally, I've had MUCH better luck in March than September. Maybe August is good, but my last September trip we didn't get more than a WEAK head high day the whole 8 days. Don't let the rat bastard boaties down there convince you that a trip to Ollies and Witch's Rock is a sure bet either. That $h!t was NOT happening at all, then I checked my sources and found that those spots don't really turn on this time of year. Just a word of advice...still a great trip, just don't expect epic waves in the late summer because (only from my experience) you may not get them. Feb-Mar, on the other hand, was friggen AMAZING, and I've heard that April-June is the best.
