Sounds crazy, but, how do you NOT see a kayak coming toward you? I mean, you said it yourself, it's 5 feet longer than your board!
I knew they were there close by and I saw one of the guys, but I think the second guy must have been right behind me a little farther back and slightly to my right and I was looking more over my left shoulder since the wave was peaking and breaking to my left and I just didn't see him when he caught the wave behind me and to my right... Like I said it was probably my fault, he caught the wave first and it's my job to give way but I was just about to the popup and all of a sudden I see this flash of a red kayak come shooting across from my right side..I am just glad I didn't get to my feet about the time we hit...
Ahhh I guess I was at the same spot as you, I didn't think he was being too bad compared to the zillion other groms and kooks etc.
I hate when they paddle out. They even give you the "hello fellow wave rider" nod, like I should be stoked they're gracing me with their company. Luckily, I see less of them these days. I think a lot moved on to SUPs, which ain't much better.
I had a friend who was a fantastic surfer. He was shot in the back in a robbery and lost the use of his legs. For the next 10 years or so before passing away he was a regular in the lineup on his kayak. More balls than any of the surfers......mostly paralyzed from the waist down and charging big waves during hurricane swells. RIP Allan.
Seen more of 'em this summer - usually in rentals. I try keep a good distance away. But they can provide good entertainment - like watching a couple screaming, paddle-flailing knuckleheads making the drop sideways over the falls.
One step below a SUP. One step above a jet ski jackhole jumping waves All three don't belong in the surf
In all honesty I'd rather see a kayak in the surf than a SUP. At least kayakers tend to stay in their boat instead of falling off and shooting it at you.
