It's a common misconception among the Euros that Americans don't travel abroad due to some misplaced fear or a resistance to cultural exploration. Well, that couldn't further from the truth. Here are a couple of points to set that straight: 1. The USA is a massive county (about the size of all of Europe) with plenty of territory to explore. If you include Canada & Central America, we've got a whole continent that would cover everything from Iceland and Scandinavia all the way down to the Middle East and North Africa. 2. When we do travel abroad, which is frequent for many of us, we want to get the best experience for our money. When it comes to surf travel, expensive airline tickets should lead to an epic trip. I just looked up the price of getting from my east coast US home airport to Dakar. Cheapest I could find wast about $1300. That's what I paid to go to Australia last year and I just looked and found $1100 tickets to INDO for the same time period. And... I've never been to Senegal, but have a buddy that goes to Angola all of the time and he's not too keen on the local "culture." So.... the reason you don't see more Americans is fairly simple. Getting to your place (which appears to have pretty lame surf from the videos you've shown) is more expensive that getting to several places with almost guaranteed epic surf and more attractive culture and environment. If I do go to Africa, it will most likely be to somewhere like Anchor Point: I wish you the best of luck, but you're probably going to have to do it without American Dollars!
Am I the only one confused as to why there is a rule book post for africanguys surf camp he's trying to promote? I mean. "heres a list of rules to follow in the water. oh yeah and come to senegal and stay at my surf camp." seems a bit loopy to me. Heres a rule, #1 dont be a donkey
And WTF is the no swimming after eating until 45 minutes - you sound like my Mom. I would rather have a bag of peanuts, a banana, and some granola right before a long session, rather than cramp up on an empty stomach. Duh!
Hey PhiloSurfer Now we are talking!!! Was wondering why nobody responded to those arguments Think you are very right, that price is a big reason why no Americans come here when you can travel to all these place with "guarantied" epic waves. Here the advantage is that you can surf alone without any crowded and it gets pretty epic + we are on the most Western point of Africa attracting swells from the North, West and South offering potentially Africa's largest and most consistent swell window. So it's almost never flat, might be 10 days per year we can't surf. Compared to Morocco where you can be unlucky to have no waves for 2 weeks in the main season. Angola vs. Senegal is the same as comparing the culture in Canada with Peru Have about 10 guests from the US per year + delta pilots coming here all the time. They are all great to surf with, so positive and so much fun. Where the Europeans can be so boring. Heads up and thanks for your responds
Never in a million years would I have considered anywhere in. Africa other than South Africa for a surf trip, but after checking out the website its on the list. Admittedly pretty far down on said list but still. Who knew?
Ohhh yeah that's pretty bad. We stay here for now, but ready to move if it gets worse. Guess that will happen soon. This is sure the right movie to watch, if you want to learn about Ebola Outbreak from 1995
