Hey guys, didn't want to derail the 100th surf vehicle thread. I'm getting a 49cc thunder Tao Tao scooter next Monday for around here in vb. I've seen pictures of surf racks on scooters and wanted to get peoples opinions/suggestions on placement and type. I want them to be able to hold my 9'8 so if people have experience please feel free to share.

    uhhhh

A rack that mounts to your scooter and holds the weight of a 9'8 is a pretty tall order. The scooter is really light, the longboard would act as a sail and with a simple gust of wind send you to the other lane, and also the actual support of the rack to hold a board that big is a bit sketchy. Can't say I'd reccomend it too much but I totally get your stoke. I've got a Klr650 that I've been wanting to put surf racks on for a long time. I guess yours is only a 49cc so you won't be going to fast anyways. Good luck to ya, post some pics when you get it set up.

oh and if I'm on my motorcycle and see you on your little moped, I will make fun of you and most likely go Mario Kart on your ass and knock you off your scooter with turtle shells.

I saw a guy with a longboard rigged to his beach cruiser ridiing across the morehead city bridge to Atlantic beach once. About 30 minutes after I passed him he showed up on the beach with the first 18 inches of the board held on by a few fibers. He said that a gust of wind pushed him into the gaurdrail.

my beach cruiser with my longboard was real sketchy, can imagine more sketchy on a moped. shortboard was no issue really..but still beware of the wind. i had to modify the rack on my cruiser as longboard was too thick for it..did a lot of bending of those racks. spend the extra money and get the carver racks, they are worth it. just make sure your 3" log will fit...

Rocked the scoot for almost a year. It was during a time in life where there weren't many options. It had it's moments, but for the most part it pretty much sucked, and the thing was so loud I'm sure it just pissed everyone off. It broke down about once a week.

Go for it. If your handy, shouldnt be bad.

I've built several racks for my motorycles to hold luggage. Both out of aluminum and Steel. I can't weld, so I have to be creative. I bend them by hand, and attach pieces with stainless hardware. Aluminum is nice, because it doesn't rust. Steel, you'll need to clean up and paint. You can buy different size/shape pieces of both at HD or Lowes. If you have a metal supply store nearby, they'll be cheaper.

You essentially need two "U" shaped racks off the side, out of the way of your legs and the controls. You'll probably need to attach them top and bottom because there will be a lot of torque on them. You need the scooter on hand to visualze it, and figure out the best locations/bends etc. The toughest part will probably be how/where to attach. Definitely needs to be attached to the frame. If the frame is exposed, you can have the metal run a length along the frame, and clamp top and bottom. Hard to describe, but you can use different pipe clamps etc for this. DO NOT CUT OR DRILL INTO the frame in any way. Sometimes you can find easy attachment points on a frame. Where there are already bolts, you can buy a longer bolt and piggy back in that spot etc..

On windy days, consider taking your shortboard :)

Scooters typically burn up their engines within six months, especially if it's your primary mode of transportation.

Yea I short board longboard, whatever the waves call for. We have a car but my whole family kind of uses it so I just want something for my self so I'm not waiting for rides all the time for work . I won't be going super far. And I'll make the racks work. I've made racks out of PVC before but they weren't all that great so I saved up and got the carvers for my bike. Longboards are sketchy on bikes even with the mule thing that hangs off the back.

Not true. The best part of having a scooter is telling women that you're European.

Once you slap that Italian flag on the back, it might as well be a f*ckin Porsche. Instant babe magnet. Just make sure you got a basket in the front for the wine and baguettes. And wear a scarf wherever and whenever you drive it.

DO NOT ride that thing to sandbridge. At best you'll be a complete menace to everyone (including clueless tourists in big RVs that don't fit on the road) on that winding country road. At worst, you'll be stuffed into a ditch and with any luck there won't be a tree in the way as well.

Not to mention every local surfer that's heading home to surf will get a crack at making sure you don't make it out to lineup.

I don't get why it's so bad to have one. Why should anyone care? Plus I usually go to Sandbridge in the am anyway so the regulars are all gone. I can hold my own surfing. I'll just find my own peak anyway...
