Quick backstory: saw a Chilli rare bird on craigslist a while back. Never heard of the shape (although I'm familiar with the brand), so I did a little research. Long story short, become super interested in the shape, but it sold by the time i decide I want to buy it. fast forward a few months, and I was down by hatteras yesterday to catch the recent swell that rolled through. Caught chest with the very occasional head high and glassy mostly by myself for the morning. Anyway, after surfing a few hours I roll to one of the local shops that I know carries this board I've been eyeing for a while. They are currently selling other boards of the same shaper for two hundred bones off. Tell the sales rep if he can knock between 150-100 off the board, I'll buy it right then and there. he gives me the usual bs about how he needs to ask the manager...whatever. Manager comes out, and I tell her that if she can work with me on the price, I'll buy right then and there. Goes through some "I need to check" crap. Mind you, everyone that I'm dealing with is in their mid-20s at best. She comes back, says sorry, this is the price. I let her know that the Chilli website says I can get the board direct from them for 75 less than the shop's asking price. Says that the website is wrong, and that the board can't be discounted blah blah blah. Then they all step back, leaving me holding the board. I give them a look that says I don't know why the fVck Im holding this, and hand it to the nearest sales associate. He looks bewildered, and doesn't say anything. I say sorry we can't come to an agreement, and leave. The last three or four times I've bought boards off the rack, the person selling me the board offers to knock usually between 50 - 100 off the price right off the bat. When I bought my minisimms last summer from my local shop (where I kinda know one or two of the guys who work there - as in I see them our surfing and at the shop), they offered to knock off 100 without me asking for anything. Not that I think I'm owed anything, but I was caught off guard that they passed up on a $700+ sale by refusing to knock a few bucks off the stated price. All this begs the question: what have y'alls experiences been?
