I am planning a trip for next year for Central America. I live in Baltimore area and was wondering what the best bang for my buck would be. I have been to PR so many times that I have no idea where else to look. Nica? Any recommendations on places to surf/stay?
El Salvador is hard to beat...direct five hour flight from DC, 90 minute ride from the airport in ES to a number of world class righthand pointbreaks that pretty much fire from April - October. The wave quality is unreal and its a cheap easy trip.
El Salvador looks great with pricing and the waves there but is facing directly south. is that an issue?
Right on Barry. You flying boards down? If so WHAT BOARDS??!! (don't run away from this question this time Barry, I've got you cornered)
yes, that would be an issue in February and March. By April the southern hemis are working. we went in mid April and it was head high to well overhead every day. The points were absolutely reeling off...unreal.
I have answered ALL of your questions, and happily so--you just did not go back to read them. I am renting this time; not taking a board for predominantly beach breaks. No sense in that.
Costa Rica is an option, although the season is similar to ES. Southwest flys direct from BWI to SJO and just added Liberia on certain days of the week. It can still fire in Feb/March timeframe.
That's an interesting reason to rent. After renting and then bringing my own board, I will probably never rent again. I hate not having my own equipment regardless of the type of break it is.
DP I have done one surf trip where I rented (cr) and regretted it. I saved a few dollars and a little headache that comes with it but was not worth it. OP, flying in to Liberia makes for an easy trip and I would plan right before Florida schools/university's spring break. I have had luck with lesser crowds.
Same here, best board I could rent was something I would never consider riding otherwise, but when it's your only option, you make the most of it. Still had fun but not like I could have.
I usually planned my CA trips 2 weeks after Easter. That's when their Summer vacation ends and deals begin.
Dude I don't have the time to read every post. Are you retired? I don't like renting boards unless you aren't doing enough surfing to justify the cost of flying them down. I also hate finding a brand new stick smashed to pieces by the GODDAM JFK Airport workers (that happened). April 2017 in El Salavador. That's where I have decided. Seems a bit localized but I can try and play nice. Punta Roca looks sooo fun. Anyone been?
