Surf Vehicles.

Hate to say it but the best surf vehicle is a minivan.... seriously... After 3 hours in the water in February you can get out of your suit inside with the heat going. All boards fit inside, and you can sleep in it.

STI is fun, and she has treated me well for the most part, but the engine is made of glass and it costs $35k. I am done with the whole payment thing. Would prefer to be payment free.

 

That is a Land Cruiser. I am not sure if they made a manual. My DD will always be a manual, but the beach truck can be auto.

 

Interesting how we have one thread marshaling SI users to oppose east coast oil and gas exploration, and another thread where many of the same users post pictures of their vehicles, nearly all of which consume large amounts of oil and gas...

Better MPG's, smaller cars; good for the environment and easy on the wallet, no?

I don't agree with drilling on the east coast, but I also don't complain about gas prices. I can afford to fill my tank. My new DD will get 30mpg, so that isn't bad.

 

last manual 4runner was either late '90 or early '91.

I think a Nissan XTerra may be the last mid sized SUV offering a manual transmission in the US...and certain years are plagued with clutch issues. Jeeps have them, but I don't really consider the wrangler an SUV.

It gets harder and harder to find vehicles with stickshift here in the US. I guess shifting just makes it too damn hard to text, drink coffee, and apply makeup while driving.

It's a shame, because most modern car engines will outlast their auto tranny. Then again, in the US thetrend has gone to leasing anyway, so most people don't care....they're just doing a 3 year rental.

 

yeah it's a big misconception I hear from so many people that don't know much about cars. They think that because subaru is japanese it's automatically reliable. While that boxer engine is a thing of mechanical beauty and sounds awesome, not the most long lasting engine... Again still a blast to drive but I'm happy I went with the honda in a tuxedo

Irony is fun. From the explorer I used to have which was a gas guzzling pig to my TL, I get much better gas mileage. My TL is pushing 290bhp and I average 29 mpg combined. I'm pretty sure it's rated at 28mpg highway so I think I'm doing well in that aspect lol. All the crazy truck pics I posted were just for sh!ts and giggles. That 6x6 merc is just ridiculous and the sticker price is half a million euros.

30mpg isn't bad at all. Things have changed a lot in the last decade.

I wasn't trying to get all holier than thou, a la Speed Bump- I was just making a note of the contradiction. We are all environmentally concerned people here, for the most part, but many of us drive vehicles with an environmental impact that is disproportionate to our needs.

Most of you have been to many other countries and would agree that the vehicles tend to be much smaller, less wasteful, and thus more efficient (along with other things like product packaging and female asses). We have taken steps towards that in the States but I don't think most of the trucks on here get 30mpg (or even 20 for that matter).

I guess what I mean to say is that, online, or responding to a petition, we are all thinking "f*ck oil exploration on the East Coast!!." But when it comes to purchasing a surf rig, most think, "I want a big cool toy, f*ck Flipper and Shamu, it's a f*ckin HEMI!! Let's pulverise some Plovers!"

How do we minimize our damage? Do you really need a truck if you're not some sort of Contractor?

Personally I'd rather drive a small ****ter (96 Cavalier/04 Accord etc) that lasts, and saves me cash, so I can go do whatever else with my remaining funds. But alas I am a public transpo guy (f*ck you Margaret Thatcher) so it was easy for me to climb atop this pulpit.

 

That's my current surf ride. Gets about 21 MPG. Could probably do better but I have had to pump the A/C down here for a few months. Can get me around on pretty much anything. Pulls a boat, a ski, whatever. The 9'3 Longboard hangs off the tail a couple feet, but ohh well. She is the ultimate beach machine.

I did the SUV thing for years. Liked em, but I always felt like the inside would just get trashed from surfing all the time. Throwing all your sh** in the bed of a pick up and just spraying it down once a week is the tits.

I know, I could have a Prius, at strap boards to it and all that. But I can walk to the beach from my house. I usually never do, because the closest beach to my house is on a north angle and doesn't break but twice a year, so I drive about 2 miles to surf. About 1 miles to work each day. Rarely ever drive off the island, so I don't feel like I am making a huge negative impact.

I could be driving a huge 250 or a tundra and be getting like 8 MPG, so I didn't go that far....

But if any of you boys have not done the pickup truck thing before, give it a shot next time. This is my second one, and it makes EVERY walk of life easier.

I think it is applicable to the "surf wagon". If you surf, you find a way to make it work. You can put racks on almost anything.

I drive a 2013 Camry. 30 mpg and up, I put on some Thule roof racks for my longboard, and my 'real' board, aka sponge, can just be tossed in the trunk.

 

The new Camrys are nice. They tried to talk my wife and I BOTH into them while at the dealership last time. Just my lifestyle, with a wife and a 3 year old. A day at the beach looks like we are moving across country. Chairs, beach toys, coolers, towels, boards, umbrellas. There are a million reasons why. But if I had a toyota Camry, I am sure that I would have that thing looking 10 years old on the inside in a few quick months. I mean, the back of my truck has about 2 inches of sand after spending 2 hours at the beach... A car would be toast.

I am also not involved in these "anti BP" and anti-fossil fuel arguments on this site, at least not on the other side of them, because I have a reasonable vehicle, but saying that I get 21-25 MPH and its so much worse than someone getting 35MPH to the gallon isn't really valid to me. You are either playing the game, or you are not.

You either bike or scooter to the beach, and take a bus to work and do all the annoying things that are required to leave a "small footprint" then the rest of that is all nit picking....

I do NOT approve of the new measures by Obama to do these oil tests in the Atlantic. What I WILL DO, and have no problem with, is pay MORE for gas. I don't want to make those kinds of sacrifices, just so we can save 20 cents on the gallon. That is ridiculous. Make gas more expensive, and don't do these crazy expansions.
Raise the taxes on gas. Then next time I take a road trip, I will take the wifes 4 cyl, SUV that gets 30+ to the gallon.

I don't care if your hybrid vehicle gets you 50 MPG, you are STILL as much of the problem as I am. I mean, my company shoots trucks all over town, up and down the 95. On any given day, we are burning up $1500 in fuel on 5 box trucks. The clients pay the fuel, but that is the business of this country. Shipping, receiving.

There are 18 wheelers by the thousands leaving every major airport on the daily in this country. How much jet fuel do you think FEDEX burns up every day? Or Delta? How many trucks do you think Walmart, or CVS, or Tacobell have running on a daily....

Fuel is fuel. Companies will pay. People will pay. Up the price. That is the only way to make the WORLD change. You can't just keep digging and fracking and blowing sh** up underwater to find more. Let's focus on what we have, make it more expensive and make everyone suffer a bit.

But again, I don't care if you get 50MPG, you still gotta stop at the pump, and you still fill that sucker up with a tank of fossil fuel. So, unless you are biking and jogging to work... I aint trying to hear all that.

 

Hey for the record my Tacoma is one of the old school 4 cylinders('03) and gets better mileage than the car I had prior to it...just for clarifications sake. My dumbass didn't even get a 4WD.
