my favorite video (so far) is probably September Sessions. Even though it isn't long, to me, it's one of the best representations of surfing out there. some of the best if not the best surfers of all time going on a boat trip in Indo. To quote Rob, "The waves were as good as waves get." , the soundtrack is amazing, and the monologues by Kelly and Rob are words I will always remember. I love it. And for the east coast movies, check out Dark Falls. Its filmed up in Jersey. i hooked up with a chick watching it so you know its gotta be good hahaha
I agree with super fish, I don't comment as much as I'd like because of it 1st movie I ever saw - Shelter. 2nd movie I ever saw - Thicker than water I've probably seen around 75 surf movies in my short life, and those two are still my favorite. they represent the spirit of surfing to me the best, and the people in the movie are good people, people that I still look up to. theres great stories in the videos, and I'm always dead silent while watching them. I can also sing every single in each video by heart. Both soundtracks are the most played on my itunes. I 1st saw shelter when I was i think 10? and since then shelter and thicker than water have been so inspirational to me. I'm still waiting to meet friends that are as cool as the guys in those videos. Recently, year 0000 blew my mind, a must watch. I enjoy ...lost surf movies like Whats really going wrong and the decline. Julian Wilsons movie Scratching the surface is killer. i wasn't overly stoked over Lost Atlas. You can't go wrong with Campaign 1 and 2, even stranger than fiction. Slaters section in Campaign 2 is still I think the best section in any surf video PERIOD. One track mind and Frame Lines are also good. I find the good in all surf movies really. Also, wasn't stoked on Dark Fall. i wanted more East Coast surfing, and honestly Andrew Gesler's voice narrating really annoyed me. He paused like 2 seconds after every damn word!
Yeah, Dark Fall for sure. My one beef with it is that too much of it takes place outside of jersey. The pacific ocean scenes start to drown out the local stuff after a while. Still, it's probably my favorite surf movie, just for the 10 minutes or so they spend on winter.
I gotta say I really liked Dark Fall. I thought it was an awesome movie, based on being a jersey local. They go through the seasons of NJ. They do travel which I thought was a good thing, rather than just watching the whole movie based on NJ footage. I think its a happy-medium with NJ footage and rest of the world footage. It's cool to actually see some of these NJ locals visit world class spots and surf world class waves we read about all the time. And to be honest Andrew Gessler wasn't too much of a nuessance while watching. I definitely recommend this movie! Gleason and Humphreys are dirt-Y!
Did you really just consider Shelter to be a surf movie! I just spent the last hour and 20 minutes watching this awful film, and I want my minutes back! There is hardly if any surfing in this movie. They show maybe 6 rides and 2 of them are the same clip of a pull in barrel closeout. This movie is about a kid who leaves his hot girlfriend, and ends up banging his best friends brother! Are you fukcing kidding me! In no way am I a ho mophobe, or against gays, but this film is not a surf film at all! I would not reccomend this movie to anyone if you are trying to get hyped for a swell, or looking for a good surf flick. PASS on this joke of a "surf movie"!
Everyone should see these movies once, no bs or filler, just quality vids: Pump! (young Occy killing it), Green Iguana (more Occy), Searching for Tom Curren, and Bustin Down the Door (although more commentary than some may want), and Seedling. I think they all put newer vids to shame, maybe minus Thicker than Water. Like others have said, I was not that impressed with Dark Fall either.
dark fall for sure. the winter part is one of the best video parts i have ever seen. Deans part with Bruce Springsteen's Atlantic City in the background gives me goosebumps. I pop Dark Fall in whenever i get homesick at school. I also kinda liked Modern Collective. the intro is kinda drawn out and lame but once you get past that i like it.
HAhaha right on! Wow cant believe I wasted my time like that. At least I was at work when I watched it. Sorry to bash the wrong movie brotha. LEts Get Some Waves Today!
+ 1 on the Decline. Good surfing. Good soundtrack. Different locations. Some classic funny lines from pros ie. "I'm a pretty good surfer but a very good drinker." or "I only get to go on the cheap trips... like down to the liquor store". Makes surfing look fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtu0-syFb7o&feature=related 5'5 the original awesome. Made me wanna get a fish and chop hop when I was in high school. Redux. Defines what surfing is tomorrow. fishy, fin-less, quad, retro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cnrm4xtq-Bs
dark fall is nice every once in a while, i really liked esm always right. its got tons of footage in it too (including nj)
cant believe noone's mention soul surfer yet...sooo gnarly seriously though Rip Curl's 'Medication' with Taylor Knox and Mick Fanning is one of my all time favorites, a little old school but it's quality. Dark Fall is by far the best East Coast movie I've seen to date. Red Bull's 'Who Is J.O.B.' has some sick Hawaiian barrels in it and awesome camera angles, it kind of missed the boat on the down to earth essence of surfing though
I like the woodshed films stuff, except when they get kooky. Like the ladder stuff. Single fin yellow was a cool concept.
