Eh... a lot of very basic info with some serious names missing from that list of shapers. I seam to recall seeing a lot of ads in the surfer mag for a lot of these shapers that are listed on this.

I miss the days when Surfer wasn't so suspect. Too bad it's more about ad rev than actually giving real life feedback on new boards or equipment. It always come off more as an advertisement than actual information that would ever assist me in making a buying decision. The surfer mag forum design section is the closest thing to getting actual feedback from other people on boards and equipment.

    Just my opinion.

You're right on about the SurferMag board guide - the ARE paid advertisements. We advertized in the 2009 board guide and wrote the entire board specs and bio interview questions. There's no one at Surfermag picking the boards to be shown and objectively reviewing them. It's just a formatted ad.
It's not cheap either. That's why some one the bigger name board companies opted out of advertising in this year's board forum - 2009 wasn't a good year for many of them.

Unfortunately the surfboard industry these days revolves around marketing and what the pros are riding on perfect waves around the world. This marketing in turn dictates what boards surf shops carry and ultimately what most surfers buy and ride. 80% of the shapes marketed are from west coast shapers and are not optimal designs for East Coast waves. Yeah, the boards work but surfing is easier and more progressive on custom shaped boards by local shapers.

Can you sticky this response above?

This is the gospel truth for board in our area. CIs, Losts, etc are good boards, BUT they are made for waves that we rarely get. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHAPER not some cookie cutter company.

    Merry Christmas

    No

buying a board , or any other surf gear from local shapers, Wetsuit makers , Ect. puts money back into your community for one thing and plus you know what youare getting when you buy from a local shapper.

You know you are not getting some over seas chinese cut out .

CI , Lost and most for the other brands in that artical are good boards. The CI Machado Single Fin is awsome to ride. But yeah they are all over the magazine cause they have the money to pay for it . Then agian when you make the kind mark up on one of those boards how can you not afford it

Me personally I Buy Cooperfish , Brian Wynn surfboards mostly , Yeah Cooperfish is based outa the westcoast but there board are so awsome, Gene's boards are works of art
Brian Wynn makes great long and short boards, Brian is a great board maker and he definaly has my buisness

nice, a lot of LBI dudes ride Wynn. Everyone S. Jersey should check out him out.

I believe that it is very cool to ride and support local shapers, but you can make ANY surfboard work. We all will find our magic boards somewhere, but remember (ego's aside) that when it comes down to it we are all just playing in the ocean.
