Ok so I have a pretty old board (Patterson thruster) that I want to take out but the only problem is, is that it has minor delamination. There isn't a crack or any thing that makes the board not water tight, I simply think that this 5 inch delamination on the left side near the rail was caused by being used for many years. It doesn't stay in when i push it down and it only goes down maybe 3cm tops. The shape of the board is still the same in that area but i can tell that its a minor case. Am i able to surf this or should i just stay off of it until it's completely fixed?
well because it's so minor of an issue due to other cases, probably myself by filling the area and then reshaping.
You need three things to repair properly: Resin, cloth, q-cell. Then: Cut out the soft glass. The foam will probably be caved in a bit and will need to be filled. Fill the cavity with a resin / q-cell mixture that is thickened like mayonnaise with the q-cell and let harden. If you can't get q-cell, finely chopped up cloth can be used to thicken up resin, but its not as good. sand the filled ding to the shape of the surrounding board scuff up the surrounding deck area with coarse sandpaper out like 1 inch into the good glass glass over the repair with two layers of cloth that overlap the repair out into the scuffed up deck area, let harden feather sand smooth and hotcoat (brush on) more resin Sand Done Two other things - yes you can surf it a few times before you fix it, if you need to. It will likely be damp or wet inside when you cut the glass out. if so, let it completely dry
If you fix it your self- vacuum bag it to fix it. Only good way to fix it unless you want to reglass the area. Search this forum- this has come up so many times in the past. Vacuum bag is brah
Brah if you want to do it correctly- vacuum bag it. Search the forums- I wrote instructions with pics about it sometime ago. There are other ways- but I would either vacuum bag it OR cut out all the loose fiberglass and re- glass the whole area. If you want to keep any graphics or board color- vacuum. If you don't care- cut and reglass. That's the best answer - there have bee many many many posts about this subject inthe past years- which is why no one responded- either that or they all just care too much about arguing with each other about non surf related subjects... Seriously this place is not what it use to be..
The delamination is caused by water getting in the foam in from a ding in that spot, or somewhere else and causing the glass to seperate from the foam. So in answer to your question, yes, it could be damp.
Oh ya it most likely will be damp- good call I forgot about that. You gotta let it dry out and not ride it for a while. Keep it inside for a while And cut open the delam to let air in- could take a longtime to dry out - months
