Teenager rescues swimmer at Sebastian Inlet proving once again that there are angels walking the earth disguised as surfers http://www.wptv.com/news/region-ind...n/vero-teen-helps-rescue-swimmers-in-distress
Great story. This is a constant occurrence at Asssateague. I have along with my friends made many rescues on unguarded beaches over the years. The odd thing is most people you rescue are annoyed that you saved them and act, once in the beach like they were never in trouble. I once rescued a fat dog in Ocean city after the idiot owner was throwing its ball past the breakers expecting it to swim through 38 degree water to get it. When I got back in the owner said he was fine he would have got back in, douche
Sh1t....I would have thrown the drowning swimmer an anchor to hold on to....... "Do goody" surfers....nothing more revolting than that......
There's only lifeguards in the summer. It reminded me of DPSUPs epic story of how he rescued that swimmer a few months ago.
Hey Betty. I called the park today to see if the lifeguard situation had changed during my absence (been traveling for two years now), and the ranger told me no. I specifically asked if there were guards now at any time of year, and I was told no. I even stated that one website mentions guards are now present from Labor Day to Memorial day, and I was told the site, as well as many others, were inaccurate. He even laughed about how some sites say cabins exist, lol. If you find out differently, let me know.
Yah. Every once and a while, I see emass' tread pop up and enjoy the re read. So, even though he had a rocky entry into the SI Nation, he left us a better place with his stoke, his legendary annual awards, and so forth. Re the SFLO comment, I was thinking of another state park that has a guard only during the summer and made the assumption it was a Statewide policy. Maybe Seb Inlet doesn't have a guard in any season, and maybe it's not a statewide policy. But, more importantly, why would you call the park?
Definitely not a statewide policy. My local state park where I do most of my surfing has 2-1/2 miles of beach and NO lifeguards any time of year. They did have guards in certain sections at one time but haven't in 15-20 years. There is actually some liability in having guards as it implies total safety and I believe that is their reasoning. They will close the waters to swimming when surf is rough or high rip current risk. Surfers get an exemption.
There are no guards where I surf usually. Some spots have them in the Summer, closer to the tourist areas.
By 'statewide' I meant at the Florida State Parks. I believe that's what Betty meant as well. Most of the local city beaches do have lifeguards. Some might remember the local lifeguard that was fired for saving somebody outside of the area he was guarding: http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/20..._1_lifeguard-services-jeff-ellis-beach-rescue
