Dear Surfer, it's well known surfers suffer from frequent ear problems. I am conducting medical research to try and discover how big a problem is out there and what we might be able to do in the future to help. Please spare 2 minutes to complete the CONFIDENTIAL survey below and add to the research already completed by European and Australian surfers. Many thanks, Dr Chris Foxton https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SURFERS-EARS
Just doing my part Z Fockin stocked right now. Half day today. No worky tom or row, looks like waves are quite possib-le. Rock out with your cock out.
Goode job seldome! Maybe ye get a little extra bump the next two days from Kate... A little far away, but wishful thinking
So I went to my ENT for a look see, it was awful. He shoved a tube down one ear and sucked a bunch of wax and debris out: "DON'T MOVE" he said. then after pulling a baby dingo out of my left ear ( I came to see him about my right ear), he said I have bony **** growing, and accused me of being a cold water surfer, which I am defiantly not, but I am an old crusty so it didn't surprise me. My question is, what can I do to reverse it without drilling. I heard 50% alcohol / 50% white vinegar every day or every other day is the way to gradually eat the calcium deposits up, without getting too aggro. Any advise? I know this is the go to place for state of the art medical advice and such, thanks in advance ya'll.
Does it bother you? The bony growth? If not leave it alone. My left ear isn't even big enough for a pin to fit through. My head phone ear buds fall out all the time. I'm pretty much deaf in that ear. But other than that i don't have a problem with ear infections or any other problems. So the bony deaf left ear stays. If you do decide to drill, make sure you get the best surgeon. I've heard stories of people getting drilled and ending up with vertigo.
Dr Clownface says alcohol swabs everyday is good. Alcohol will dry your ear up. And if you have an ear infection don't listen to the doctor. They will try to use ear drops to treat it, get antibiotics, doctors use antibiotics as a secondary treatment, you don't have the time to be docs science project, you could do permanent damage. I just shoot sawed offs when my ears hurt, the sound vibrates the pain away
Get a second opinion, first of all....I mean, after SI chimes in. Or, go see your PCP and get his or her advise, since the PCP probably knows you best. Does the ear bother you? If not, I would wait and do nothing.
Thanks for the advise kind folks. It does not bother me. Vertigo would be an issue as I have enough problems staying on my board as it is. So no drilling for me. I'll just fire off a few rounds to loosen things up, and I'm seeing my ENT Wednesday for a follow up.
I like the Surf Ears plugs... I can hear a lot better then with the cheaper plugs... Still kind of annoying to wear plugs, but it saves me from getting ear infections and helping any surfers ear symptoms.
I agree if it isn't causing you problems don't do the surgery. I had almost complete closure in both ears due to the bone growth, was having regular problems with infections and blockage and had both ears drilled (its not actually drilling, but close to it) a few years ago. For me anyway, it was needed, and worth it. I especially agree with the part about using a really experienced surgeon. I have a friend who went through a really painful experience when this surgery didn't go as planned, had to be re-done and it was a real ordeal that i doubt will ever be completely over for him.
