damn I've heard of this before. I have a constant ringing noise in my ears that I'm getting checked out this month, most likely the diagnosis will be surfers ear.

I think it has something to do with surfing in cold water?

Listen Rhody, you can't be hanging out at the Adult Bookstore and expect nothing to happen to you. Those video booths are teaming with all sorts of AIDS and chlamydia. Then you guys do all of that stuff.

Listen you need to get that HPV vaccine, and stop letting all sorts of people touch it.

And ear plugs are great. You shouldn't be talking to people in the water anyways. That could lead to more diseases. C'mon, man.

Prevention is key. Don't let it get to that point people, after every surf especially in the winter when the waters 35 with a -10 windchill make sure you clean and dry out your ears after every surf. I use rubbing alcohol because it absorbs excess moisture

I've had ringing in my left ear for years - well before before I ever started surfing (20+ mos ago). It gets increasingly noticeable with age. I first noticed it while lying down. Had thought it was the bugs outside. Now, I hear it much of the time. Hearing loss also is more pronounced in my left year.
It hasn't yet reached the point of annoyance. Doc says there isn't much that can be done. If the ringing gets really bad, there are surgical methods for possibly relieving tinnitus, but they often don't work. For me, the ringing gets louder after surfing in cold water, but it fades after an hour or so.

 

Just had both ears done. right ear 2013, left ear 2012. Both were about 80-90% blocked. The operation MIGHT not be a big deal but the symptoms you will be dealing with for years as your ears get worse will be a big deal. Frequent infections, loss of hearing when sand and ear-wax blocks what's left of your tiny little canals that are full of bone growth for several years in my case, but I waited until it was absolutely needed.

The post surgery recovery SUCKs. you cant hear ANYTHING for at least 4-5 weeks because your ear is stuffed full of gauze and antibiotic gel. No surfing for 2-3 months following the surgery. The discomfort in my case wasn't that big of a deal after 24 hours following the surgery.

Then there is the odd guy out whose surgery goes bad...its not a risk-free procedure...I was just talking to a guy in the water last month with a real horror story from his recent surgery. My advice is to at least wear your hood whenever possible, even a bonnet hood wjen the water is under 55. Keeping your ears WARM helps and you can still hear.

Good luck. and get a second opinion. The guy who says it isn't a big deal sounds uninformed or at least a little too cavalier to me. Any other questions, fire away.

 

If you don't like SurfEars you can get molds of your ears from an audiologist and send them to Westone to make you custom surfers ear plugs that fit perfectly and let in some sound. This is pricey, but comfortable and less pricey than surgery . . . I have both SurfEars and Westones. Westones have never fallen out in the water.

 

And surfears have fallen out?
