Surfing a real sport

It's a shame your Dad is giving you problems. I'm sure its hard for people that don't go out in the water and have the experiences we do to relate to it. I know my Dad just looks and me and laughs when it's the middle of January, and I'm walking out with a surfboard under my arm. He's always the first to ask how it went though and seems pretty stoked to hear about it. He gets a kick out of hearing the stories of me getting worked. Try and sit him down, explain your side and listen to his as well. Maybe pop a surf movie in. My Dad's jaw dropped watching AI's part in high five, he let out a few "Holy s*%&'s!". Keep at it, he may come around.

It is better then a sport....

my dad surfs too...never thought about what it'd be like if he didn't. Wifey can't talk **** or get too upset either when i sketch out of something to go surfing, especially after reading some of the letters my grandma saved from my dad when he was in his 20's writing back east in the 1960's to his family from CA. All super stoked on some sick day he had or some new spot he went to...a nice piece of family history my grandma left behind for us!!

As someone who's played virtually every team sport and individual sport except for golf....surfing stands alone. It's the most challenging sport...and continually dynamic! Every other sport i've participated in, i eventually got bored with....surfing?..no chance!!!

 

Once I started surfing it got me away from My dad and organized sports! It was great for my soul as a teenager. No pressure from the pops and or coaches only let yourself down not the team and or when you start to get better then you feel so good about yourself it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks! Now 25 yrs later surfing is so popular everyone wants to do it!! Now my Dad who used to frown upon me because I surfed and not played baseball always asks me if I got out surfing lately and is very shocked now that I am 40 that I still surf regularly! I am in great shape compared to any of my peers and unlike most guys my age who live through there golden years of high school football games I live in the present of my last good session or my next surf trip! I am stoked on life every day and do not have to say "when I was a" because I am a.... Is surfing a sport? a life style? Who cares what others call it! It is a passion for me a part of my daily existance and its personal. No one needs to understand it. Other surfers know it..
