I don't have any friends who surf here on the east coast (not too many north jersey surfers) so I always head to the beach solo. I try to hit a spot that has at least one other person out just for the safety factor but many times in the winter I have found myself out alone. I find that when you're the only guy out, others tend to gravitate toward you, probably for the same reason I try to hit a spot with one other person. I always keep a healthy distance from anyone though...no sense in crowding a spot. As long as you're eyeshot distance away in case something were to happen. In the summer I've noticed it tends to be a s**t show. I hit it EARLY to avoid the kids and the traffic. I have been here 2.5 years and never had a solo session during the summer months. Too many people here.
I go weather someone is coming with me or not.. When its 3-4 chest to shoulder clean at 11 sec but its rainy and cloudy and sketchy and the pussies start pussin is when its charging time.. As far as safety goes Im so perfect i never fall and usually surf about a foot from the jetty so if things get hairy my usual bail method is grab air onto the rocks and land perfectly on my feet and just walk back to the beach then paddle out.. Tons of ppl that surf alone do that you should give it a try
Lifeguards mean swimmers and although I like a good game of pinball I hate to make all those medical payments.......
Ya know.......most shark attacks don't happen to dudes who are solo. You know, completely alone. I'd like to think that sharks resepct the dudes who fly solo, and head off in search of a group. Plus, it's more challenging for the shark to nab off a cracker who's not alone. Oh sure, the hunting mantra says that predators look for weak isolated prey.......but sharks are pretty cool. Ya know. And yeah, you can get cracked by your board or hit the bottom fairly hard but.............that's the risk you take. Ya know......statistically your drive to your favorite shred spot is more dangerous than surfing alone. You guys do drive alone, right? Aww man, don't tell me you guys won't drive without a pack in your woodie or Escalade.......... Ok, now east coast dudes, let us all laugh at the Southern Californians who can't surf alone even if they want to. HA HA HA HA HA.........awwww I kid.....I kid. Hey, what's more frustrating? The east coast's quality and quantity or seeing perfect Lowers with 100 people on it? That must suck seeing Rincon realing and there's 5,976 people out. I don't know which is worse.
I'm 13 now. I love surfing alone. So peaceful and you always seem to get the best waves when no one is watching!
I would love trying it. I'm gonna take some of your advice and bring my parents down to the beach and show 'em my stuff. We're supposed to get a pretty decent sized swell on May 20th (5 ft just needs to clean up a bit, I think a jetty will give god protection though) thinking that'd be great to show them. I really need to because I'm trying to get some good soul searching innnnnn.......
