whats up guys, ill be in cancun, on the strip, for spring break this upcoming week and lucky me it looks like they are getting a bump. Any and all information would be appreciated including the fact if they actually get surfable waves and where i can rent a board/ surf shops i should check out. Thanks very much in advance. Cheers!
Actually, there's really no 'real' waves down there. You know, what they call overhead and pumping- is really like a waist hi day in Belmar. I would: 1- just enjoy your time staying in the hotel /resort life down there. Or 2- rebook your trip and flights to the Belmar. There is a surf shop (eastern lines- ihatelongboarders works there) right across the street from the legendary surf break- you can rent a board there if you don't want the hassle of traveling / flying with a board. Hope you score some surf!! Thank you for consulting the swellinfo forum. We have an answer for your every need Your pal Mr Belmar Ph.D.
yes, cancun gets surfable waves. I was there for two weeks in summer and a rideable wind chop blew in on the second week. From my research, they get small windswells every few weeks in summer. Dont know about winter consistency there, but waves are probably going to be cleaner. The spot that looked best was Playa Delfines near the southern end. It has sporadic rocks on the bottom, which help it break and keep it more consistent than the shifting sandbars on the rest of the beach. There were also waves in front of the Krystal Grand hotel on the north point (curved beach just inside the breakwater jetty), although that was so crowded with boogerboarding groms, I'd skip it. I'd imagine finding a board is going to be a hassle...if you're sure there's going to be something rideable, take a tuflite down with you.
My mom took me to Cancun when I was a wee little lad...there was rideable surf. We went to this island, Isla Mujeres, and no lie, there was a barreling point reeling at like chest +...mighta been the only time a year it breaks like that but it's possible.
Pretty sure that the Carib side of Mexico gets pretty good, but just like our Gulf brethren here in the states, it's probably pretty inconsistent. Best bet would be early 'cane season through late Fall.

Oh yeah, I forgot, DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://cancunwhalesharktours.com/
The only surfing I've done in Cancun was Back in 1999, having unprotected sex with a large woman. Tummy surfing. All though there was a wave there at the time, it was mostly typical beach break close out mush.
There is some kind of jetty point on the north end of playa del carmen. I saw a lone dude surfing there once....he was actually shredding a fun board. It was cool and weird.
check it...you're in Cancun...the beer flows like wine there, and the chicks check their morals at the door of senor frogs. if you search for waves in Cancun, you are a hopeless nerd, but I get it.
the gulf may be more consistent in winter, but cancun is more consistent than anywhere in the gulf in summer. Fetch is about the same for both, but cancun gets stronger trade winds and the continental shelf is not as shallow. Playa de carmen has a lot of coral and is basically blocked by cozumel island, so it's going to be the most fickle of all.
