I think its animal cruelty taking dogs surfing.some of those dogs look horrified.i wouldn't put my dog in that situation, hed fall off and start freeking out and probably try to bite me if I rescue him.maybe those bulldogs or whatever breed they are that also skate can handle it,but my dogs too big.i don't even think he can swim lol
Agreed. We all know that the human capacity for being a total douche canoe when it comes to dogs is essentially unlimited. We've all seen humans who should not own a goldfish let alone a dog. I'm a HUGE dog guy, it's easy to read dogs, they don't lie cause they can't lie, i.e., those emotions on their faces (tension, stress, wtf-ness) reflect idiot owners making them get on boards. Some of the dog owners in that vid are obviously forcing it on the animals. People are self-serving morons.
Depends on the dog Yankee.... I'm a big dog person myself, i'd never put my dog on a board, but I've seen some bigger dogs like labs, pits, etc. that love the water and dig playing in the surf, I saw first hand in PR a dog that was skilled in the ocean, this dog was chasing a stick thrown by his owner and getting it out of 5 foot of waves, swimming around for a bit and then getting back out, was just having a blast. Depends on the dog dude. Mine would have a heart attack so he don't get to surf.
Take it easy Parcheesi(s). How did your dog react to the leash the first time you put it on him? How did your dog react to the stairs the first time you made him go down them? How did your dog react to snow the first time the saw it? How did your dog react to the peanut butter game the first time you played? How did your dog react to the first time you left them home alone? How did your dog react in any new situation? Probably just like these dogs. Slightly apprehensive then they got used to it. Dogs naturally acclimate to the conditions their leaders put them through. It's their nature, that's what makes them such great companions. Cep, you think this is animal cruelty? These pampered fur-babies from Cali probably eat better than half the guys on this site. And a dog guy like you should know that a bulldog is probably the least suited for water than any other breed. I knew a guy that had one that lived near a lake. He was constantly scared his bulldog would drown if he fell in the water because he couldn't lift his nose higher than his chest. They're an example of breeding gone wrong. Every single one born has to be delivered by doggy cesarean or the b!tch (proper usage btw) and the pups die. Here's some animal cruelty from Dogmans right next to Marias in PR. That F'er should fry.
My dog jumped outta my car, swam out to me a good 100ish yards, then jumped on my board, 3 times in a row. Although she still doesnt quite get the holding still on the board and facing forward part. She also will swim all day, and go completely under water diving for stuff. Some dogs just want to be out with their owner. And some just love the water.
My dogs are alive today for my own entertainment. I rescued both of them from real abuse or from a kill shelter. I treat them well, they get better health care than me, and they are loved by my family and I (2 kids and wife). However, they are the jesters of my home, and I laugh at their own expense, every day. I say, put your dogs on surfboards and watch them freak-out. Enjoy!
I have an Ausie that was re-homed to us. First time my wife and I took him to the beach he bolted away from my wife and paddled out to join me in the line up. Made it all the way out at AI through waist high waves. I had no idea he was coming out until I saw my wife on the beach waving and pointing. I paddled over and put the little guy on my board. He was pretty happy to have made it out. I caught a little bump on the way in and the guy stood up and just started wagging his little stub of a tail. He loved it. I tried to tell him to stay on the beach but he kept paddling out so I ended up just playing around on the inside with him for a bit. 3 years later and he still loves to go out, but now he knows he can only come if I have my SUP and I invite him. He loves to paddle around with me on the bayside as well. We've had one close call on a day that was a little bit bigger than I probably should have taken him out in. I was more scared than him. The wave closed out on us and the board went up and over with him underneath. I didn't see him for a second but he came right out on the other side of the wave and jumped on board ready to go again. I doubt he's a normal dog. I certainly wouldn't force a dog to go out with me, but he's made it his choice, so I consider myself lucky to have such a cool little buddy.
Right on dude, I know what you're saying though, some of them don't belong in the water, if they aren't built for swimming and don't enjoy it then leave em at home for sure. The dog I saw in PR was an AWESOME dog, I wish I had one just like him, he had his own life vest on and was a really strong swimmer, quite amazing how he was able to handle waves of that size and not be phased in the slightest. Beast! This was at Sandy Beach by Tamboo, if you're familiar (of course you are)
That's awesome man, this is the kind of dog I want to get next, not necessarily the breed, but the temperament, love it!
Yeah I got lucky with this guy. You could look for breeds though that like the water. I bet a Portuguese Water Dog might make a good surfing companion.
HAHA, just googled those and they look like a poodle, no thanks! My wife and I have been talking about getting a Lab lately, but not till we move to the E. Coast and get into a house. We're currently in a Townhouse and don't feel it's fair to have a larger dog without our own private yard and room to run.
Yeah, they do look like poodles, but they also are great swimmers and have been used to herd fish. I've never had much luck training labs. I'm more of a herding breed guy.
That's cool, can't judge a book by it's cover I guess. I've always wanted a lab ever since I saw a guy take his out on his SUP in the flats to go fishing. This dog was jumping off his board and going after fish and whatever else he saw moving around. He'd swim around chasing after sh*t and then get back on. It was cool to see. They use that tail as a rutter! HAHA
I had a Wheaton Terrier named Finnegan. The first time my wife and I took him down to the beach as a puppy, I had big plans to train him as a surf dog. He was totally scared of the sound of the ocean, and it took a few times before he got used to it. We have a swimmiing pool and he didn't like that either at first. After awhile, he would swim after me in the pool, and got comfortable in it. Then when we would go to the beach, his love for me would conflict with his fear of the waves, and he would run out to the shore break and just bark like crazy until I came in. He was a total nut, and never got surf lessons. Just like people, they are all different. I think a Portugese Water Dog would be the tits though.
Yeah, that's been my trouble with Labs...they're hard to get focused. Some of my friends have had some great ones, but I never had much luck with them (I've worked as a dog trainer.) Something about my personality meshes with the herding breeds. I think I'm an Ausie for lifer now. You might want to look into English Labs. They are a bit smaller and have a better temperament in my opinion. The ones I've worked with have been much easier to train than the Chesapeakes or Newfoundland Labs. Definitely wait until you have some room for them to run though.
