On another tangent. I also had a border collie who would attack the light reflection on any body of water. The ocean drove her nuts. Every time I took her to the beach she would bark and bite at the waves coming in to the point that she would get sick from drinking so much saltwater. She was a great dog otherwise, but I ended up not being able to take her to the beach because of how neurotic she was....so I've had both sides of the coin.
Thanks for the advice, i'll look into them. If not a lab, then possibly a Pit, which I know some have their issues with, but I've had nothing but great experiences around them. My sister has had several and they were all big babies who loved people. All about the owner is what I've found.
It's all in how you raise them. No such thing as a bad pit, just bad pit owners. Be sure to gently tug on their ears, tails, and fur as puppies so they get used to being messed with just like any other dog. If you really want to be sure you have one with a good temperament, do this when you are picking out a pup and pick the one that has the gentlest reaction. You can also hold them on the backs for a little to see how they react and messing with their paws for a few seconds here and there also helps them especially if they will be around little people later in life. Also super important to socialize. I'm a big believer in taking your pups with you as much as possible, especially when they are young. Kennel clubs have great dog training classes. I'm a trainer but I still do classes because of the social element. It's good for the dogs to learn how to focus on you in a crowd. I usually take mine up through the K-9 good citizen class and then work with them on my own after that. Lowe's Hardware is supper cool and allows dogs in the store. It's a great place to work with them because people don't expect to see dogs there and don't usually ogle over them like they do at a Pet Store.
this is me and my german sheppard puppy look how he keeps looking back at me ha. he even rides down the face of the wave.
if yall want a surf dog get a Sheppard, i couldnt keep mine out of the water and he was always stoked to learn. only thing was he got so big 110pounds, he wouldnt fix on my lb no more, so i would of had to get a sup for him, and i tell you know if i had one my dog would be standing up going down the line on 2 foot waves.
im sure some dogs can handle it,but still I wouldn't force it on my dog.like if I was on the beach with my dog and I went out surfing and he swam out to me with a big smile on his face then maybe id give it a go.but more dog gets viscious when u try to put him in a bath.i always expect dogs to be dogs,if I get bit its because I did something stupid. and I wouldn't compare it to putting a dog on a leash or walking up stairs.surfing is for humans,u don't see dogs playing basketball or golf lol if it was even possible.i saw a picture a while ago with a dog bodysurfing in the barrel with a bone in his mouth, that was pretty cool.i like to drink and smoke pot,i wouldn't give my dog alcohol or blow smoke in his face,as that's cruelty.cruelty can mean many different things.overfeeding a dog is animal cruelty.just because they don't beat their dog doesn't mean its not mean.im a dog person, all I want to do is see them happy.if surfing made them happy id go for it,but it looks extremely dangerous for big dogs like mine.
hey what kind of training do u do?is it just obeidiance or do u train working dogs aswell? http://www.jagermeistershepherds.com/index.html this is my little crew.im not a full time trainer just part time on the weekends.i train dogs and I honestly think training itself, the shyt I do,is dog abuse but hey its what the police and military want so somebody has to do it.i can get a dog to do basically anything, except surfing.u want an obedient dog that u can walk around without a leash,or a dog that can take somebody down,i can do it lol.if anyone needs their dog trained hit me up
wow dude u proved me wrong,i had no idea a shepherd could surf lol.I been afraid my shepherd would drown and hes too big for an easy rescue.thats awesome tho u had ur dog surfing as a pup
Do you really think that way? Are you talking about your dogs biting you or some random street dog? You train dogs don't you? If your dogs are biting on the reg. like 1/year. Your not doing something right. They need to know that theyre not the alpha otherwise it could be unhealthy for you and them.
first seals, now rangers now would be a good time to tell the forum why you are trying to act like a space shuttle door gunner
im speaking in general of shepherds.it is very common for a shepherd in distress to bite their owner or whoever.theres stories of navy seals jumping out of helicopters with a dog strapped to them and the dog flips out and bites the handler.same in the water.this is common sense, dogs don't have arms to grab onto u and stay calm
Paulie I think you are wrong about Pits not being good swimmers, they are great athletes, lean muscles but built like a brick sh*t house if cared for properly. Not dysfunctional muscle like a body builder, that's bullocks. They are pound for pound the most agile, strong, athletic dogs there are, which is what makes em so dangerous if not properly trained. They aren't the largest of dogs, medium compared to some others, but they run sh*t in the dog community. Love em, but only with the right owner.
from reading the waves under the surface thread,if a person is in distress of drowning, they tend to fight and make the rescue extremely difficult.someone going under the surface is going to pull u down with them and possibly kill u.same things with dogs.they don't have arms to push u under to keep them afloat so they will bite, and im not talking daschunds or Chihuahuas.shyyyt I personally know the Kelly slater, andy irons, parkos of dog training.legends of the trade who charge 80k for a trained working dog.my own personal dog for example,i walk him without a leash, little children come up and pet him,and at 1 command I can send him off to take a person down,if I wanted to,but I don't need my dog getting put down.look up the sport shutzhund, that's all it is,a sport for working dogs.dogs that bite on the reg, first off weren't trained to bite, its simply an obedience problem and we can fix that too.
there are a lot of seals that came from texas.chris kyle the American sniper dude,a Texan.and the dude that got me into dog training, mike reitland, another seal from texas.the eastcoast doesn't have that shoot anything that moves mentality that texas has.stand ur ground snaggers
yep it's all about the owner, those dogs love a challenge and want to work and do stuff to show how awesome they are, very intelligent to. If I end up getting one I will see if he likes the ocean and let em surf if he wants to. I'll GoPro it for you k
