yo guys, does anyone have any experience surfing in/near cape town? my company just asked me to go down there for business, and the first thing i thought about was surfing (obviously). anyone have any experience surfing there? good spots? it's the summer, but is the water warm? any info would help a lot.
There's good surf in southern Africa, however its still late spring so the water should be warm or cool, I'm not 100%, never been to Africa.
My buddy went to the world cup this year. He spent most of his time in Cape Town for the games and 4 days in Port Elizabeth for surf. He scored waves every day but only had size one or two of the days. It was right before the waiting period for the Billabong Pro, so it was a good time to go, seasonally speaking. Not sure if there is a better place to go besides J-bay this time of year. He did say that he got the longest wave of his life. 3/10 of a mile on google maps... He stayed in a hostel which was pretty cheap, which came with a quiver of boards to choose from. He wore a 5/4 with booties i think..
bringing suits isn't a prob. i thought about bringing boards but my buddy suggested to buy a couple used pro models in shops and then just sell them back when im' going to leave. porbably will save $ vs. shipping the boards. they're giving me an apartment and a car, so i'm pretty set in that dept.
never been but i'd love to go. stoked for you. how long will you be there and - if you don't mind me asking - what kind of work do you do that gets you sent to such an exotic place?
Shoot me a PM bro, I went to South Africa last year and surfed a lot down there. Mos def hit up J-Bay. Just Capetown or are you going to Durban as well?
I work for financial software company and we recently opened an office down there. I have to go oversee because they are getting busy there for the first time. I'm real psyched I'll be there for 3 weeks. About 30 min from the beach so I can surf ever day in the mornings and after work if it works out how I'd like. A lot of daylight there too which is great
