I know, its talked about on here all the time. But in the first week of may, I have an opportunity with work to go down to PR. We are building a huge entry-way for a new wave park in San German, which is in the mountains of the South West part of PR... I will probably just take an extra few days once the work is complete and maybe even invite my wife and daughter down...

I have been looking at various surf maps and searching around the net for some decent spots down on the SW tip. I know Rincon is a good go-to area up on the NW tip, but most surf maps and things I am reading show the WSW tip of PR not really having waves... I found what looks to be some sick spots down on the South side of the west coast. About an hour from San German.

Punta De Brea looks like one of the closest spots to me and it appears to be a firing left hander that gets hollow and fun if there is swell....

I know this topic has been brought up numerous times on here, but this isn't a case of me being able to plan a surf trip down there and pick where I want to go. Im stuck where I need to be for the most part, unless I just bail after the work is done and drive over to a completely different side of the island, which is a possibility if that SW corner is crap this time of year anyway...

    Thoughts?

Hate to say it...but you're pretty much out of luck on that part of the island. I would finish up your work, then push to Rincon.

I don't think there are any waves down there. It's mostly mangrove islands from what I hear. There are surf spots on the south east side but like I said, I think its mostly mangroves and mangrove islands. I remember seeing some kite surfing in that area and saw all the mangrove islands they were kiting around. Apparently they loved it for the flat water. From San German your best bet would be to go north to wilderness if there is nothing in Rincon which there probably won't be that time of year. Its not that far. I have driven a circle, or rather a rectangle aound that island and that corner has the least surf. If there is nothing at wildo then keep going north to surfers beach or jobos.

Yeah, i was assuming that the exposed to the Atlantic is where all the waves are when they come regardless of season. I looked all over wannasurf and stuff, but it doesn't break down seasonally where the swell angles are coming from... Probably not much in May anyway... The trip might get pushed back to June... Dunno...

I have heard great stuff about Jobos, Rincon, Surfers, Table Tops and Wilderness....

Hoping to score... Never been to PR. Hopefully this will be the first of many trips. I think im the only guy ever to go to Hawaii for 2 weeks and there were only decent waves for about 2-3 days the whole time, and nothing epic. I circled the whole damn island twice too. Figures.

Man, unfortunately the SW coast needs a TD/TS/Hurricane brewing on the W side of the Caribbean to get waves.... but I hear San German is nice area. Chances are you will have to drive up to Aguadilla/Isabella to get something worth surfing unless there is a North swell punching down then you can do the Rincon thing. At worst you're probably looking at a little more than a 1.5 hour drive.
