Dear Swellinfo, There seems to be a problem with one of the Hurricane forecasting maps. I used to just check swellinfo . Com exclusively for my hurricane forecasting needs... But without the most critical and crutial maps-I may have to start checking competitors maps (msw?) The map that is missing is the forecasted track of a hurricane that kind of shows a cone for the forecasted direction and track with lines that mark time/days It should be located here: http://www.swellinfo.com/tropical/i...on=NT&year=2016&eventnum=7&hwvstormid=7&size= And is kinda like this map- but more basic and a basically combining all these storm forecaste tracks into one cone shaped forecaste: http://www.swellinfo.com/tropical/i...region=NT&year=&eventnum=7&hwvstormid=7&size= Please fix this issue as it is important to us swellinfo surfbort riders Thanks Mr Belmar Ps... If Micah hadn't abandoned us- this probably wouldn't had happened, specially in the peak of surfing season Pss- if anyone knows of a different link for the said cone hurricane forcaste - please post. I guess I'm willing to look at different surf prediction websites now
Yup! I also noticed problems with ALL text products in the hurricane section. TBH i'm not that suprised at the decline in quality since the site was sold, but I am rather dissapointed. I spend a lot more time on Weather Underground these days. Mr. B: You can find pretty much everything that is broken/missing on SI here: https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/ It's not surf specific but very throrugh none-the-less. Dr. Master's blog is awesome and the comments are super informative.
Yea it's really a bummer - specially when you have to use a non-surf related website. I was using weather underground app as well for the hurricane maps. Surfing really depends on the weather- so it's important that these things work correctly. Some of us like to ask off work for days when waves are predicted... So if it's wrong - we lose a vacation day. Also- there is only one week of surfing season left!! Head high- thanks for confirming... I thought I was going nuts. I just spent an hour trying to find that map on swellinfo
What happened to the little notification thing that used to pop up every time a tropical storm evolved?? I really kind a liked that thing.
I'm thinking that when the rest of the hurricane part of the site broke, that went with it. We're on a ship with no one at the helm fellas. Well, someone is at the helm but i get the impression that despite their best efforts the nuanced nature of surf forecasting is lost on them. Outdoor hub is on the verge of blowing their investment in this site. Yeah you get a ton of clicks b/c of the forum, but if the forecasts go away, we all go away.
This site isn't terribly informative but it gives good visuals and you can see how different systems work off of each other. https://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-78.68,33.79,879/loc=-77.918,29.592
The site could just link to National Hurricane Center. It really has everything one would need. More concerning to me is the actual forecast. I recall that Micah made changes to the algorithm's used when tropical swell was upon us. I don't know if that change happened automatically, or manually with his input, and no idea if it is being done now. I saw the buoy jump to a 15s period at 8:50 last night, so despite being small, the TS swell is there. i also noticed what i thought was more of a difference between the swellinfo forecast and some of the competitor's than usual. I think (hope) swellinfo may be undercalling this weeks forecasted swell a tad, at least for NJ. I think it may be a touch bigger than what they are forecasting Tues-Wed. Then again, that could be wishful thinking on my part.
Hey guys, I really appreciate the thread. I need threads like this reporting issues so I can get them to the correct developer to get them worked on. Now that I've been notified we're going to start working on it ASAP. Sorry for it being broken to begin with. Again, any issues with any part of the site please feel free to start a thread, or contact me directly. Thanks again!
WOW!!! That's awesome! I like it! Austin- can you add a map like this along with all the broken stuff getting fixed?
I kinda remember that too- but it's been a long time since I have seen accurate wave heights forecasted with groundswell/ hurricane Basically you would have to look if there's any hurricane activity- then watch the wave period, and when you see the period over about 10/11, you basically double the wave heights to get an accurate number.
IDK about hurricane swell but the Gloucester forecast is usually too optimistic now. Nantasket and RI are usually fairly accurate (usually means actually flat when predicated flat) but Gloucester MA shows 2+ and green often when it's a koi pond there.
I've found the site to still be relatively accurate for my area (southern monmouth/northern ocean) for our standard wind swell events. As accurate or better than others. Certainly the data anyway. But for the really low end of the spectrum, you just need knowledge. I mean knee to waist can be accurate and no fun at all, but also accurate and quite amusing depending on wave direction, period etc. etc.
The thing I cannot get SI to do is wipe my ass after I take a dump!! Austin, can you please include a ass-wipe function. Please include an "app" so we do not have to look to hard for it when nature calls.....
