has anyone out there tried switching and succeeded? I am curious what it's like to do and may try it if it's not nigh on impossible
Haven't tried it surfing but I do it skating\snowboarding\wakeboarding\wakesurfing\etc. It definitely feels very weird when you try it the first time. And all those are much more controlled environments. I think it would be way harder in the ocean, and I'm comfortable riding switch in those other endeavours. Good luck on your shoulder Betty. I know your pain, I dislocated mine badly 20+ years ago and it's never been right. It's still my biggest problem if I surf multiple days in a row. And one of the hardest joints to fix if it's jacked up.
Define "succeeded" If you mean getting reasonably good to be point where you can pretty much surf competently in both stances, then hell no. If you mean pop up in your switch stance and maybe go down the line generally looking and feeling like you just came out of surf camp that's just a matter of picking a few days with softish waist high waves and going for it. Riding a funshape or longboard helps, as does attempting switchfoot only on waves where you'll be frontside. Oh and just switching stance while your already up and riding your natural stance doesn't count as switch. pop up switch stance for the full frustrating effect. Your rear foot will feel awkward and useless.
These are great comments! I woke up and my shoulder felt 80% better, could actually pop up on the floor with no pain. So I ditched the goofy foot idea for today. The waves were pitifully small and shallow, got a handful of waves, patiently waiting for better sets. The main fun was the camaraderie and a big ole manatee hanging out near us. And sunrise was pretty spectacular too! I worked hard all week icing the shoulder and switching from freestyle to backstroke. I guess it is paying off. I gotta try goofy foot one of these days though, just to check it out.
It's kinda like learning to surf again. It adds a bit of a challenge. You might feel like look but it's ok. I think it's for the better to learn switch. An old buddy of mine once told me that 'it was due to laziness that surfers don't learn to ride switch' and it's true. If you want to learn and take time to try, you can do it.
Good comment. I AM A KOOK, and have learned to embrace it. Am way too old to worry about what I look like. That's the advantage of being old-- you don't care what other people think
The best surfers are the ones having the most fun. Start off with small waves. Gotta have that try-it attitude but start off on small stuff. It's very easy to get smacked with your stick. We don't want to see anyone get hurt ronharr.
my left hip is shot, so my brain won't allow me to bring it forward and sometimes my right leg pops up in front of it, so maybe it would work if I consciously tried to do it
