Trev, are you paid on an hourly rate, or are you "scheduled" as a GS or SV?

This could answer a couple of issues.

Was this a bonus payment? If so 40% is normal. Also are you factoring in stuff like a healthcare premium you might pay each check or money into a 401k. 40% is way too high for a non- bonus check.

right on dude! i hear they have a tax exempt button you can press on your checks, for example a high overtime check. I just don't know the legality of it and am probably going to talk to my financial advisor.

They tax us on each fire check, considering im only working for 6 months of the year, my job relys solely on overtime hours. Therefore, if I work a 122 hour work week, such as the case this time around Im making 13 bucks an hour, plus hazzard pay (25% or a few dollars extra an hour) and overtime (time and a half for over 8 hours in a day).

After working everyday from 530am to 10pm on a fire assignment, and sleeping on the ground for a few hours after a meal for 2 weeks straight, ive accumulated close to 5 grand worth of gross pay. This puts me in the highest tax bracket (they measure bi-weekly) and I get taxed the same as a person who makes 10 million a year (hildog).

The highest tax bracket is close to 40%, but after my yearly wage equates out to be less than 20 grand, i get a tax return equated to that so about $2000 back in april. Thus is the life of the government wage slave.

Yeah dude, you're in a bracket (or "tier") where you are assessed at a higher tax level than somebody making $12/hr.

Even though you are seasonal, the Government is taxing you as a full time long term employee. The gov is very good at hiring people and putting them in the highest tax bracket possible. It gives the appearance of an excellent wage, but in reality creates a situation where you give the gov more and more of your hard earned $$$.

I'm assuming that you are also claiming exemptions.

Don't hit the " exempt" button, you most likely wont qualify.

You have a couple of options...

Follow the good advice of the others and decrease your exemptions. However, don't expect much of an increase with your net, and kiss your tax return goodbye.

Or, increase your exemptions and find a *good* tax consultant (not HR Block). You are currently spending your own cash for items that could probably be itemized and contribute to a healthy return. Make a couple of donations to worthy causes...more money.

A creative and knowledgeable consultant will make you far more money than the costs of their services.

yea dude im gonna call my tax person right now.

its weird tho im only a gs 4 and you think that they would just keep me in that bracket rather than factor in all my overtime hours and bump me up to a higher one simply for the purpose of taxing my highest checks differently.

Im just scared of doing too many exemptions because it might mess with my unemployment which is the only way we can equalize the governments raping of us.
