Wow, that's a hell of a commute, gotta be rough in the summer. On the gloves, you're gonna need them before too long, but you might be kind of bummed if all you have is mittens. You might be better off with a thinner pair of gloves, and then 7mm mittens for later.

 

I work in Lewes and yeah the drive to Assateague (yeah its the closest surfable wave on alot of days) to surf after work in the summer is unbelievably brutal. Taking coastal highway down or back is out of the question...after 10 am every day...guaranteed misery. Back roads...stuck at 30 mph behind a chicken truck on a two lane is better than watching the next 5 traffic lights cycling sitting on the coastal.

 

Congrats man and welcome to SI, where all your dreams can come true! As far as the addiction and your woman, just stay consistent and eventually she'll learn or she'll get sick of it, either way you win. My wife didn't understand the addiction at first but after she realized it wasn't a passing phase and was a very important part of my life she then started to "get it". Now, she's one of my biggest supporters and makes sure I get surf because she has come to realize i'm a much more fun person to be around after I have gotten in a good surf. Few things I need in this world: A good woman (check), good waves (check), good food (check), good herb (check), cold beer (check), my dog (check), friends & family (check). One or two of those are negotiable, but not waves.
