I'm giving all you jacka$$es a reading assignment: In the new issue of 'Surfer' is an article called The Blue Mind (Page 54). Read it. It tells us why we surf from a neuroscience standpoint Part of the article talks about how your body releases endocannabinoids, dopamine, and serotonin while surfing or even just being in the water. There's also some good quotes from the great Shaun Tomson.
mine just came in the mail yesterday...thanks for the heads up. I will be reading it in peace manana whilst...well you know.
Always down for some endocannabinoids, dopamine and serotonin, throw in some ions and let's party! Sounds good I'll check it. Thanx
copywrong laws will force Micah to delete the thread CyC rarely gives us stuff, I am gonna look for it
Copyright laws shouldnt affect an internet forum. If Micah charged us to view the thread..maybe... Post it, I refuse to pay $7/year for 95% ad space
it is a good article...talks about how with surfing it is the perfect balance between "red" mind and "blue" mind because of being in the ocean (where we originated from, sorry wayne) and all of the endorphins, etc released associated with that (blue) and then how we are constantly scanning, organizing patterns and then categorizing in anticipation...also trying to avoid death, etc (red) all in all, it is a good read...i do think that this theory of read/blue mind is probably prevalent in any type of physical activity that one takes pleasure in. there might be a little bit more to wave/ocean sports due to the evolutionary link, but honestly i get the same level of "euphoria" out of swimming, but it's different...a little more meditative but the article does mention how the "blue" mind phenomena is comparable to substance abuse, and how it may be a reason, or cause for those "living in a van down by the" ocean...
Not to side track but I remember watching ST shredding the waves at Jeffrey's Bay,way back. Still does. Always liked his style. 1st class.
As I read the assignment I kept picturing myself sitting outside the break , staring off into the distance with no concerns.
Sorry dudes, I'm a bit techno impaired. I'll try to figure out how to scan the article tomorrow. Your Pier summed it up pretty much. He gets an A.
