Every year when I put my wetsuit on the first cold front of the season it is so tight I have trouble breathing. After a few good swells I somehow seem to surf myself back into some semblance of shape to fit into the wetsuit and still be able to fully breathe. Maybe it's time to buy a new one. Or lose 5 pounds.

Then there's all the high calorie food and snacks from Thanksgiving through the Holidays.
I wish daylight savings time would stay effect year round. Not sure why we're still doing the DST/Standard Time thing.

Inhaling chips slathered with cheese & drinking beer with a funnel usually adds up to more lbs. Hit the gym, stay disciplined & you won't end up looking like The Maine Latex Rapist.

Carver boards. I've been charging pavement with no relent daily and nightly. Straight pumping on any ramps, hills, and inclines/declines to be found in and around town. Has blown up my leg strength and mass big time but the upper body and back is only getting so much work compared to paddling and pop-ups on the water. The core is getting crushed proper on the Carver though so that is key. All is fine and good until that snow hits and they put down the sand and gravel then bye, bye Carver. Will hit indoor parks and pools/bowls/verts in the area at that point. Getting into the skate culture insofar as it can help my surf. Bert style all the way.

Will inevitably have to hit weight circuits in the winter but that's not a bad thing. Haven't lifted a weight in 7 months I think but haven't needed to with the surf/skate volume.

It's all diet braddahs. All diet. Little to no booze and only 1 sloppy day of eating a week and you're stoked.

Heresy, bro. Drink as much as you want, and give up food. Food is so 2000 and late.

I am the king of feeling like a fat ass. At 5'6" and jacked, I usually weigh in at 170lbs ish. The past two weeks I have been in the 175 range. At my height, if I eat a burger I can literally see the bulge in my stomach. American portions are not meant for short people. Cutting off 1/3 of your burger is not meant for men. Aint getting any younger either. Metabolism is slowing down.

This presents another problem: volume. I need 30 liters underneath me. And I have to compromise between board length or style. I either have to get a board thats longer than I would like it to be and risk popping up too far forward, or I have to get a small wave monster thats an appropriate height. I can tell you off the top of my head some of the shapes that limits me too (Sharpeye Disco, CI Dumpster Diver, CI Weirdo Ripper, and a DHD shape at 5'8" that comes in just about 30L)...

The remedy: A gallon of water per day, and 2 weekly nightmare days at the gym that include an hour of cardio, followed by 600 rep supersets for my upper body that leave me nearly crippled afterwards, and diet. I try to eat less than 2000 calories each day. Yogurt or fruit in the morning, apples throughout the day every 2-3 hours, and then my beast meal for dinner. I also try to flush the pipes to avoid having a poop sit in my stomach. Start your day with two warm glasses of water and a mason jar of coffee and you can guarantee you'll spend an hour on the can with your laptop scouring swellinfo before work.

Dude, I just complained about my weight to a bunch of bros.

I got back into surfing this summer and was fat...hated surfing that weight and looked like a pregnant dude on the beach - 217 @ 5'10". I had to surf a short board with much more volume then when I was a kid. So I got the stoke back and decided its time to seriously lose some fat...I have since lost 30lb's and surfing has become even more fun...it is amazing the relationship between weight and surfing with regards to your own performance. I want to get down to 10-12% body fat which should be about another 15lb loss. My quiver still consists of 2 boards that I bought new in the late summer for the higher weight but funds are low...find myself buying all new clothes...my pants/shorts are falling on the ground.

Feel much better too after losing it...just gotta lose a few more and then keep it off!

Got lots a love for Chuck, but that's friggin hilarious.

This is the truth. Went ~75% vegan two years ago and wow, what a difference. You can stuff yourself stupid with healthy stuff every meal and still lose weight.

MA - that's because the veggies you are stuffing yourself are largely water and ruf***e and have little to no caloric content albeit plenty of vites and mins.

To the dude who said he's only taking in 2k cals a day, that's an excellent way to get fatter. It slows your metabolism down big time by downgrading thyroid production from the limited intake. BODYWEIGHT MANAGEMENT IS SIMPLY A MATTER OF ENERGY BALANCE. Like a bank account with deposits and withdrawals.

Sorry, there is so much misinformation here . . . We should stay away from giving each other this advice. If you reduce your cals below maintenance, you won't "slow" your metabolism over the short or even medium term, and even over long term you can manage it with periodic carb refeeds . . . The problem is to be even halfway intelligent on this you need to read a lot of research.

I am 6' and 160 lbs at 8% bodyfat benching 225, cranking twenty plus chins, at age 55. I eat low carbs except when I don't, fast once a week . . . And I read obsessively about diet and nutrition. Most of what we hear in popular wisdom is outdated and untrue.

Full disclosure, I am only a so-so surfer, but I am practicing a lot! With low bodyfat, staying warm in winter is tough. Heated vest and 5/4 are already in use surfing RI.

I don't think you need to read about it. You can if you're really in to diet books.
But like people have stated here, it's all about diet. If you eat healthy and are remotely active you will be fit. It's not rocket science although the millions of diet books make it seem that way.
The bottom line is discipline. If you like to eat like crap more than you like to be in shape you will struggle.
Portion control is key. You don't need to eat as much as you get served. If you eat half of your meal from most restaurants you will not be hungry.

And BTW, people always ask "since you're a vegetarian do you still drink?". I love this question. Think about how idiotic it really is. The answer is a resounding "yes", but in moderation for sure, and never the hard stuff. A good, unfiltered, bottle conditioned craft beer each day will promote better health (physical and mental). Yeast is damned good for you so DO NOT dump out that last little bit of your Sierra Nevada...suck down that slime.

Excellent advice. Ounces are lost in the gym, pounds are lost at the table.

Agreed on the misinformation. That could also include the above paragraph. Less caloric intake = less T3 (in a general sense). The body is the most prudent investor/spender we will ever know. If it takes less currency in, it will spend less. Are there exceptions to this? Of course, but most are further over the head of readers here than the simple topics we are currently discussing. You're assuming anyone in caloric restriction is employing the use of a cheat meal or cheat day to rejuve the thyroid when 98% of dieters aren't on the same page you and I might be with academic knowledge and anecdotal experience.

You are a fit old buc mang!

Brah, there better be some man food at your vegan eateries when I come up to charge with you in Vacationland.

Especially when playing casino blackjack in the UK.

Then you'd have been stoked today at Deal as I heard the shred swell had a full 2-hour window!
