Depends on the person. I have one buddy and if he says he'll be there, he'll be there. He's got no prob with dawn patrol. So if he say's he's in then it's on and I'll wait for him. I'm the same way, so I'm one of the few he calls and says "meet me at the dock at 5:30am, we're taking the boat to...". He's a way better surfer than me, but I show up and make the paddle out, so I get called. Another bud is the opposite, he could care less about DP, shows up whenever, most of the time misses the best waves. I tell him when I'm going and where, and if he joins fine, if not, who cares. He doesn't get the call from our other bud, as he knows not to even bother. Guess which one is the better surfer...
We used to fill the old Pontiac full of beer, fishing poles, stack the roof with boards, and run up to Sebastian Inlet. Leave 3 am and invade 1st peak at dawn, five or six of us, usually two hot girls who couldn't surf but could paddle out and distract the lineup a bit. Summertime. Clean glassy bowls chest plus. They hated us. I dont blame them. We got into some stuff, caught lots of waves and fish and story and were never welcomed back but came back anyway.
The waves become a blur, the sessions with true friends always stand out. Good waves are a treat. Good waves with great friends ... always a blessing. Any waves with good friends are great waves.
I jokingly last summer told my friend lets go to hatteras for the weeked. He showed up thirty minutes later with a sleeping bag and a case of miller lite. We piled in the surf van and camped out in hatteras and fished and cooked fish on a fire. It was good times. caught a few waves, shared the stoke. Even tried to skim board with a piece of plywood I happened to have in the van. I want to do hoodrat sh!t again.
