Hey guys, I figured I'd jump right in and ask for advice, being new here and what not.
I'm in my first year of anything salt water related, and looks like the winter season is also slowing down from epic 5@8 that rockaway swell that my first year was blessed with.
So as I was being accelerated yesterday back shoreside by this 3-4' on my funboard (no, I don't care, i like it, it's been good to a kook, plus I bought it new...rip off? Maybe...) I thought maybe there's more to life. It's still a b**** to turn, plus I'm not the worlds most physical guy. But I love how smooth it is from the top and down the rippley line. It's a 60 litre bus... I'm thinking about downsizing to 37-40.... And finally conquering duck dives, cause right now I might as well bang my face on shore and staying dry, and this turtle thing is... Well I dunno...it works I guess.
Anyhow, after some research I'm considering the R.V. Seems like it would be a solid logical next step toward a short board given the conditions. Plus I wanted to spoil myself with having two sticks instead of one...so maybe my girl could paddle out too sometimes, I owe her that much for the hooded 4/3 she got me for winter.
What are your thoughts/ opinions on the R.V? Am I missing something or is there something to compare it to before I spend my year's allowance on it?
    Thanks in advance,
Name's Max, nice to meet yall

While duck diving...really? That's pretty crazy. Well how about the whole cork top with carbon rails instead of stringer down the middle? They tell a tall tale of "obvious" advantages of never needing to break bank on wax anymore but.... Is that all hot air? Definitely would like to see the board last a few seasons.
I should have considered finding a local shaper first, that seems like a solid way to go. Thanks!

As for shapers, I'm not super bound to rockaway... If there's a dude out here with good hands and a head on - that's great, but I bet locals would laugh if I said I have a local spot out there. They have been nice enough though, especially since I still show up for cold water adventures ;) But i could also travel south across a few bridges if you guys know anybody good, I'm not pressed on time or anything

The only shapers I know of in the Rockaways are garage guys (maybe someone can correct me here?).

There's Faktion & Nature's Shapes out on the island. You could try them.

You could also stop into Boarders surf shop next time you're out there. I was in the other day and they had some beautiful Matadors (Jersey) that might fit what you're looking for, at good prices too.

The RV sounds fun but I have to wonder if it does everything they say, that's a lot of bells and whistles. Even then, you've gotta ask yourself, are you REALLY gonna be throwing turns and surfing rail to rail? Or just incrementally stepping down from a funboard?

Be honest with yourself about what you need the board for. There's enough people at Rockaway with boards beyond their ability.

The board is not the issue at hand. You will find a smaller board that accelerates your learning curve. The main problem is (will be) when (if) you take your girl out. Just don't do it. For the love of all that is good. The ocean is a refuge. Just wait, you'll see.

Haha I see where you're coming from. She most likely won't go anyway, it's just for that rare occasion where you'd rather have one extra when you'd like one. She knows it's my time off and doesnt object. At least not yet!

Ability-wise.... I'm definitely nowhere near shredding as you'r call it. But I do want to progress in a calm, natural, fluid fashion. Not trying to win any awards here, just catching a few rides and enjoying life man.

Bro, why the hell not? The 2nd annual SI Swellie Awards are given at the end of this month. You arrived just in time. Get nominated bro. Any top achievements this season? Conspiracies you're part of? Are you really a wahine? There are over a dozen Swellies given out to a host of different categories.

So far every day out feels like an achievement of sorts. Did manage to wipe out and get the board to the face the very first day I went into water, that and wearing a 3/2 on 4th of July, yup.... Resurfaced bleeding from the nose all over the deck, lesson learned, and I knew this was for me ever since

Hey max, go to long beach surf shop in long beach,ny. They have a few Stretch Gbuzz models in the volume your looking for, board catches waves so good and flies.

Also have Bunger out here. I own all three of these shapes, they are all well crafted and the benefit of going local is being able to talk to the shaper and tell them what you are capable of, what you want to do on the wave and the biggest factor is that these guys (Petro @ Faktion, Mike @ Natures Shapes and Tommy @ Bunger) all surf here- so they know what conditions are like on the Island.

I've heard good things about the GBuzz, but Long Beach Surf shop? No thanks. Once, my wetsuit was out for repair so I went there to rent one. Forty dollars! After the train ride out there, I was surfing no matter what, so I paid the $40. Needless to say, never again...

If you're spending money in LB, and have a car, just go to Unsound...

True, I didn't mean to leave Bunger out. Added benefit of this is that you'd have an excuse to drive and surf some spots further east than Rockaway. You might be surprised at what it's like surfing without high rises and a never ending supply of lineup 'buddies.'

It's not too bad, I'm usually further out past the high rises, so it's fairly open country... except for when a local surf school is out... But then sometimes there's chicks taking group classes haha
Other than that - def a good call for an expedition out east.
    Thanks guys
