I formed a house band at my school. One song is with 100 5th graders singing the 1930 song "Happy Days Are Here Again." The gym teacher is on drums, my boss on bass and me on electric guitar. It sounds like The Ramones outdoors on Coney Island. The school and their parents are in for a real surprise at the moving-up ceremony 9:30 a.m. on June 20. We are doing 10 songs.
Me too, this is the record that really sticks out in my mind. Start to finish, a classic, but I dig this song.
This one especially...
I saw Operation Ivy in the late 80's, this makes me feel really old. The guys in the band probably aren't more than 5 years older than me. I do occasionally still listen to their discography and the first few Rancid albums. For some reason, Tim Armstrong's voice has started to annoy me as I've gotten older. At least on the Rancid stuff, not so much the Operation Ivy stuff.
I know man, I was just a kid when this sh*t was hot. It's one of kind. I know what you mean about Armstrong, gotta be in the mood for that type of sound.
I've heard some of their newer stuff and he sounds pretty awful these days, especially live. I haven't seen them live in many years, but just from watching youtube videos and stuff like that. He never sounded that bad live back in the 90's. Some singers voices age pretty bad. I remember Bob Dylan's was shot before he even turned 50, while Bruce Springsteen is late 60's and sounds pretty decent still. I remember seeing John Fogerty perform during an intermission of one of the NHL Stadium Series games a couple years ago and he sounded amazing for a mid 60's guy, while Melissa Etheridge performed during the other intermission and was really rough to listen to. I know Rancid still puts out albums, but I haven't really listened to much of their stuff that came out after 2000. Journey To The End Of The East Bay is definitely my favorite song of theirs, which is all about their time in Operation Ivy.
Agreed, after their first 3 Albums I started losing interest in their music. I've seen them live a handful of times, pretty fun concerts actually. But it's been years like you said, so yeah no clue how bad he sounds now. I'll remember the good ole days though.

Yikes! His voice even sounds blown out in the studio! I figured they could doctor it with all the tools and technology they have in there. And Lars Frederiksen is looking almost identical to Wattie from The Exploited these days. I mean a total dead ringer. Yeah the first 3 albums were definitely the best. They lost me a little bit in 98, much like The Clash does with Sandinista. That album was really inspired by Sandinista, but it's not nearly as bad as that. Their 2000 album wasn't too bad though. Speaking of Sandinista, I was so bummed that The Clash made a 2.5 hour album and it was that. I wish they made a 2.5 hour album of songs that sounded like their self titled or Give Em Enough Rope. Even songs that sounded like most of London Calling. I thought Combat Rock was better than Sandinista. Most of that sounds like Blondie (Blondie is better though) bad New Wave and really horrible Reggae.
I still like Rancid, agreed not as good as back in the day but I can still find a song or two even on the newer stuff that I dig. Glad you guys posted Operation Ivy, that tape was in constant rotation when I was twenty, She's A Bombshell has great memories. Tim Armstrong put out a solo reggae/dub album I actually liked a lot. The first track is killer.

Yeah some of their newer stuff is okay. I probably couldn't get into a whole album, but some if it is pretty good. I haven't heard Tim's solo album. I'm not much for reggae/dub though. Haha! Beats me! I still can't figure out how to do it on here at all. I'm on another from that has youtube tags to put around the pasted URL and that's how you embed it on there. I've even tried to copy and paste them over to this site to see if they work over here and they don't.
