Its difficult for civilians to get how important the combat action ribbon is to Marines. Im 4 years removed from my enlistment. My mom showed me a letter I wrote her from April 2003 where im almost bragging to her over using a 249g machine gun on the enemy. At the time I guess i was just happy to be alive, but years removed from it, i realize how messed up it is. War is like the super bowl to an active duty combat military occupational specialty marine. Which is a crazy statement. But that's what we did to stay alive and make it feel like a sport so we don't think too hard about the fact that the marine next to you could die tomorrow protecting you. It is a twisted self preservation mechanism. But it works most of the time. If you read my story (which is tame compared to most of my buddies deployments) you will see i don't glorify war i only try to describe what it does to you emotionally so people can better understand today's struggling veterans. Whoa, this thread feels like therapy.

 

War is a trade, just like any other profession.

Thanks Metard. Im not down, people are entitled to their opinion, that's what's great about this country. Just wish people would get that our military fights for the freedom of its people to speak however they want. I surfed like Shiite today, that's got me a bit bummed though.

 

But our wars aren't about our freedoms. If it were, would old ladies be have to be frisk at the airport? would storm troopers in Boston get to march into neighborhoods and remove people from their homes at gun point? ever since Butch allowed 9/11 happen gas prices went up and freedoms went down.
I've got nothing against squids grunts zoomies and jarheads. except the ones I live around and drive behind.

 

Chich, I think most of your posts are witty. But im not trying to politically angle any of this. But you do realize you're able to voice your opinion...because of those squids, army dogs, and devil dogs? Our country has a TON of broken parts, but the military still knits the blanket of freedom that you're able to rant about conspiracy theories and wars for profit bs under. I saw what Saddam Hussein's reign did to the people of that country. The Taliban kills your whole family if you voice your opinion against them cutting off the head of a neigh sayer. Do you have those kind of problems? i wish you the best of luck. Im punching out. If you want a better understanding of the military dude road raging in front of you, don't condemn him, try and understand what combat did to him. I know of a book that could help you sympathize.

I feel bad for the actual combat troops since our country has historically ignore them after "The Greatest Generation" of WW2. Ask yourself how much the Vie Nam MIA's and POWs were honored. We left them in the hands of our enemy because we wouldn't pay restitution. The French did and got their guys back. But to our gubmint, it wasn't worth it.

I don't have to ask myself anything. I am a combat veteran. I've been in therapy groups and Done symposiums with PowS and Vietnam vets. I've cried with them and they have taught me how to move past some aspects of ptsd. I love it when I say "im not politically angling any thing," but people simply can't hear anything past their own voices. Take care smart guy. Sleep tight, military has your back.
