Very well put. The life advise on this here forumme is of vastly higher quality than the medical advise.

I could do my job from anywhere there is wifi. I choose to pay higher taxes and insurance on my property, and pay more for basics so I can live and surf near the beach where there is warm water. Over the years, I've gotten out of the office and work out of the house, so I have a flex schedule. It's been nice being around my family so much. Next year looks like the money may be too enticing, I may go back to an office enviro for a couple years of cha ching, for the family, of course. I could still go semi-feral in Centro without a worry if it was just me, but like LBCrew so aptly expressed, you have to prioritize. And as BC said, you have to be strategic to sustain "The Lifestyle".

Having a kid will make you reassess your surfing lifestyle in a hurry. If it doesn't, you're either already set up well, or you need to assess the real priorities in your life.

In my case, I wound up landlocked in some of the worst possible places in America for 20 years for the security of a six fig income and all the bennies, surfing only during business travel (Folly, OCMD, SD) and vacation time.

FWIW, it was worth it because my world has been surfingcentric for the last 4 years since retiring, put the kid through school etc etc.

But I've always admired the guys who could manage to land decent paying jobs, live near the water and juggle the whole lifestylee. That was originally my plan, but it went down a different path.

    No regerts

Same here. I managed to stay with the same company I had been with for over a decade when I relocated from 2hrs inland to only 15 minutes to the water. I stepped down from management to go back to sales working remote. I actually make a lot more money now. There was a short period where things got tight but that didn’t last long.

We’re now saving to buy the home we have been renting the last couple years. It’s a lakefront 3BR/2BA, 2 car garage, completely remodeled. My office is the spare bedroom. My surf and smoke shack is the garage. My screened patio overlooking the lake is my refuge where I find peace and quiet, unless the ducks and birds are banging then things get loud. It’s very peaceful overall, stress levels at an all time low...

Now I have every morning and evening during the work week and all day every weekend to surf depending on time of year and amount of daylight available. And if needed I take the ole extended lunch break. Wife doesn’t bust my balls for surfing anymore, because it doesn’t take an entire day to make it happen. I get in and get out and still have all the time in the world for her, which makes “little” DP very happy. She even loves her new job and makes more money too. I mean, everything went far better than I could have ever imagined.

We have more balance now and we are not stressed about money. Surfing has become more enjoyable because it doesn’t put any stress on our life. Only thing we don’t have is friends and family near by. That has been a struggle getting everyone together but that was never easy even before we moved, so same Ole same Ole there.

Now that i’ve been here over 2 years my surfing has progressed a lot. I’m still a kook to guys like you but I’m not the same kook as when I first moved here. I’m now working on my fitness and trying to lose the beer gut. Walking and running on days I don’t surf is the new norm, which has been a great way to start my day, instead of sitting inside waiting for my work day to begin, a habit I fell into on bad or no wave days. Life is simple now, I guess that’s what I’m getting at. I’m very grateful for my life, many would kill for this setup.
