i got my eyes on one or the other for this year. indo or morocco. im goofy but morocco still looks good. any yall been to bali or mentawai or have any suggestions of places in that area where you wont be sitting elbows and ankles in the line up. but its okay i throw some carolina cutbacks so hard that it might cause a mini sonic boom and destroy a reef. i even am considering a surf boat which are crazy expensive. I think its going to be tough finding an uncrowded spot unless you do the boat option. I'm not an expert on Morocco but I would think its maybe not as crowded as Indo or Bali.
what I know of morocco: 1 not as crowded as bali. except for anchor point and a few sick reefs up north. 2 stand up tubes are not as prevalent as indo. been to bali and mentawais. bali is ruined with all the media attention. 20-20-50 guys at padang with a tight takeoff zone equals frustration. even the lesser known spots are crowded. was in mentawais before all the camps and spots like macaronis were crowded. with the right charter and crew finding uncrowded surf is very possible. also north Sumatra (telos isles) are an option for uncrowded quality. my advice would be g-land. spent a month there and the camps were at full capacity. but after 3-4 days of solid swell during a 2 week run people were surfed out. many a session had with less than 15 peeps the entire length of reef. even watched my buddy one afternoon surf solo in well overhead. even at full capacity the reef is about a mile long with different sections everyone gets waves. also with the isolated camp atmosphere people are more respectful in the water, cuz most likely youll be sitting next to them at the bar in the eve. also the winds get better as the day goes on so there is no rush in the mornings to be the first one out. lately all the attention has been on desert point and g-land has been pretty much out of the limelight for awhile. also you have to go through bali to get there so you can get a taste of both. good luck with the search
morocco would be better.maybe not as great waves as bali,but less crowded.the surfing charters are the only expensive boat trips,most pros or travelers have local fisherman drive them around to secret spots and u only have to pay them a little vs 2 grand for an American charter.theres plenty of hidden waves in bali,u just have to find the right boat captain.dont forget theres far more to indo than bali.id go anywhere but bali,u have nias to the west,myyanapar? think that's what its called.go on google maps,search the area,and find the best way to travel to these areas
haven't experienced the areas you seek but i know in my heart you are right to want more than costa rica has to offer...
I would go to Bali over Morocco any day of the week, especially since you are goofy foot. Friendliest people on earth, safe, tropical, great culture, plus access to the other gems Indo has to offer. Taking a boat trip to Ments is an entire different trip than just going to Bali. It's close to another 2 days of travel once you are in Bali. It's take time, commitment, a crew, and $$. You could do Bali alone and meet all kinds of people. Personally I would go to Bali for a few weeks, then take a boat to either G land camp or Lombok (Desert Point, if you can handle that wave)
one down side is that if you get knicked by the reef bad might end your whole trip. i dropped off my board in costa into so reef rocks and jacked up part of my leg and feet and keep me out of the water for a day and limped around the whole trip but still surfed. i would get booties for sure, i dont think rash guard would really help though. i remember whatever movie it was where the dudes were over the grinding fast waves north of bali in these secluded island and had on like 2mills or something.
im pretty sure thats south africa, pretty obvious its not bali... but the point was its a nice barrel.
