these all seemed pretty essential to survival based on the TV and movies of my youth, yet I've never seen any of them in real life

also thought quicksand was going to be a much bigger problem than it's been.

what has let you down. discuss.

Me and a couple friends got a 3 day vacation from middle school for bringing home made blowguns to school in the 6th grade.

P Shooters. Piece of PVC pipe with a balloon taped on the end, insert BB from BB gun, pull balloon with BB inside, let it rip! Oh, and potato / water balloon launchers. We use to go to war in the woods at the park by our house with these things.

Nobody lost an eye surprisingly. We did however knock out some windows and cause damage to houses and cars in the surrounding area. I thought for sure these weapons would be beneficial should we have another civil war. :D

Lot's of people seemed to get stuck in quicksand in the movies, cartoons, and TV of the 1970's. Like Metard, it was a legit worry of mine.
Another let down: Teleportation and warp speed travel. We should be doing these things on the reg by now.
Even in the old episode where Bugs and Elmer go "way into the future to the year 2000", Elmer is armed with a Buck Rogers Lightening Quick Rabbit Killer. Why don't we have that yet?

We were in High School (young and dumb); an old war veteran lived deep in woods had a lawn ornament, it was a freaking Mortar on its stand. We decided to borrow the Mortar, one of the Mortar crew was pyrotechnics guru, made M80's and "thirds" (1/3 of a stick of dynamite), we dropped the lighted charge down the tube and launch golf and baseballs, they sailed out of sight. That wasn't good enough for "Pyro", he wanted the D-Day experience, taped an M-80 to the ball, one guy light the charge and another guy the M-80 and down the tube. Those launches drew too much attention so we returned the Mortar before the police discovered our war games in Bethesda, MD.

Slingshots and pocket knives were once a normal part of a young boy growing up. Most of us carried one or the other, or both. Fourth of July fire crackers as well. Nowadays all this would be considered criminal.

Another thing we use to do is make muriatic acid bombs with an empty two liter bottle, some gasoline, muratic acid, and some tin foil. Shake it up, set it down and let the pressure build until the bottle begins to expand and when it can't contain it any longer, it explodes. I was sure this was going to come in useful one day, but nope, never needed to make one after I "grew up".

Also monkey ears were a highly effective projectile when you need a weapon in the heat of battle. We had trees in the neighborhood that grew these things all the time. Very convenient to have around! Now? Where's all the monkey ear trees when I need one?

We use to flatten peoples mail boxes with M-80's, a highly effective explosive, under utilized in adulthood.

Dude. I too thought quicksand was going to pose way bigger of a challenge in life than it actually did. Thought I even saw some once bird hunting with my pa.

I had a blowgun that was actually pretty suite.

Loved taping m 80s to bricks for underwater detonation.

Biggest let down was when I received first communion, I kinda expected it to be like what I've experience with psychedelics. I mean they said we were receiving god.

Batman's bat grappling hook was the bomb... as a kid always wanted one.

And with DosXx on the sling shot & pocket knives.. Also, don't forget a magnifying glass. We were told not to play with matches, but could get a roaring fire going using the sun.. a nice loophole

When I was about 7 the Digitally Remastered Star Wars original trilogy came out. My folks took us (my sisters and I) to see all 3 movies in theaters and I got the box-set trilogy on video cassette for x-mas. At that time star wars and light v. dark was like a religion to me. The FORCE was very real to me and I was always trying to move stuff and do "jedi mind tricks" on people.

As I got older, it really did crush me to find out that the force was just a figment of some dudes imagination. Major disappointment.

That said, I still like to let my imagination run wild and think about the endless possibilities of "long ago, and in a galaxy far away"....

Florida.... LOL So, someone did the same thing to my buddies mail box. We stepped it up and took some used BB gun Co2 cartridges, filled them with gun powder that we got out of shotgun shells we cut open. Slid a fuse in there and then added some clay around it to hold the fuse in. Yeah.... it did the job! LOL
