First off, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Bryan, owner of the online surf shop Third Coast Surf Wear Company (www.thirdcoastsurfwear.com). A few weeks ago a buddy of mine decide he was going to try to “help me stir up some business” and posted a thread on this site (you can read up on it here (http://www.swellinfo.com/forum/showthread.php?25118-Third-coast-surfwear). After taking the time to read some of the post and comments from the thread, I would have to admit that I was a bit perplexed by a lot of the negative feedback that was received. I can understand some people’s concern of the validity of the site due to what appeared to be some random comment - posting some random post about Third Coast which was then followed up with comments by other comments such as “trying to meet a sales goal”. someone else posting html code on another to make the site look as if it was some kind of a scam and un-legit site. So I have to admit….it bothered the hell outta me!

So first off, I would like to tell you all a little about myself and Third Coast. I currently reside in Dallas, Texas for the time being due to my job. And yes, I have been guilty of paddling “behind a boat on Lake Grapevine” to wake surf just to fulfill my needs of being out on the water and up on a board. I grew up down in South Texas and have always kept a low pro in the surfing community. Surfing has always been something that I have loved since I was a kid and to this day is still my greatest passion.

Third Coast started as an idea of mine as far back as I could remember. After graduating college and finally finding a job that would allow me to earn enough to make a decent living and invest in my dream I have been fortunate enough to make my dream a reality and I am very proud of what it has become. The Third Coast brand is a fully reputable, high quality dependable brand of men’s t-shirts, women’s t-shirts and an assortment of hats – from trucker to flex fit.

One of the comments asked if I was trying to market to “kids in Denton”. The answer is…Absolutely. Am I trying to market it as a “lifestyle”? Absolutely. I’m sure all of you out there wear Hurley, Volcom, Billabong, etc. How would wearing something from Third Coast be viewed as different from the others? Are those not surfing “lifestyle” brands?

So I would like to conclude by saying that the overall goal of Third Coast is to make surfing more recognizable here along the Texas and Florida Gulf Coast. Being a HUGE fan of Bobby Hurley and all that he has accomplished, I would like to follow in the same footsteps. I know some of you out in California may agree or disagree with me here but in my opinion I feel Bobby has done wonders for the surf community out in Huntington as well as all of California and the entire world. No one has put surfing on the map more so than Bob Hurley and the Hurley Brand (and Kelly Slater). I would like to be able accomplish the exact same feat. Do we want the crowds and party waves?? Hell no! But currently the Texas surf industry is brand new and is one of the most significant growing markets in the surf industry right now. So crowd control will eventually grow out of our hands. But I invite everyone to please check out Third Coast and all it has to offer. Some of you may like it, some of you won’t. Hell, if there are any big distributors out that would like to add some product to my site or vice-versa, then please feel free to contact me…..and keep checking back since I will be adding more products in the coming weeks!! Please feel free to leave your comments about Third Coast and any suggestions you may have. I’m looking forward to reading them!!! Good or bad. Hope this clears up any confusion!

See you all out on the water!!!!

I agree with gaff on this one. Someone who is passionate about surfing would put money made by selling t shirts towards the surfing community. Do something positive or something actually related to surfing. Just selling t shirts for money for yourself while trying to market surfing isn't to respectable. Comparing yourself to hurley and billabong isn't really a good thing. Lots of guys DON'T wear that stuff just because they don't want to give money to money hungry surf companies that deface what surfing is really about. But like I said, of profits went back to the coast and surfing community I think this would be a much more respectable idea.

I can only imagine how difficult it is to break into this particular niche market, but to say that this guy company is as bad as some of the larger conglomerates is lame. Sounds like a regional brand with a desire to grow regionally--his Hurley illustration is to show he wants to give back to the community. Start-ups are not likely to have the infrastructure initially (not knowing his business plan) to do this off the bat. Good for him trying to jump in...If this brand is to survive...let the market decide. No reason to blast him without seeing/using his products--maybe you don't like his designs, etc. don't buy it. Simple as that...to say that no one should try and jump into this market because of the perceived dubious motivations well...I haven't heard him say it's all about the $$$ yet. But if that is the case fine by me...but it won't last given the larger brands in existence.

Also, Gaff...serious question...how many surf companies (brands--not board builders) do you know of that are coming out of Texas?

Also Bassmon...what is surfing all about...again serious question...most people focus on the loss of soul, etc. when talking about some of these larger companies but when someone like this guy wants to make a regional start-up he shot down for even trying to break in...surpirused that this type of thing is hated on...its not like this is Physix Chinese surfboards and a fake marketing campaign...(yet).

Yea I'm not hating, just saying I wouldn't buy it. Others can do as they please. If he is planning on giving back I'm all for it like I said, but he didn't mention any plans so I assume the plans are not there. Again not saying he's a bad guy, just saying I'm not into it. He asked for opinions.

As for what surfing is about? That's a whole other discussion. But I guess my point is that this isn't a surfing company, it's a clothing company with surf "style". Selling surfing products (not cloths) or giving back to the surfing community would make it a surfing company. Like I said, he asked for feedback, my feedback is to make it more about surfing and I'm all for it. And again, not hating, but considering he didn't mention plans to give back and he said he's already making a living, I'm assuming it is about money. I could totally be wrong though. Just the vibe I got from his post

"overall goal of Third Coast is to make surfing more recognizable....."

This is exactly what I dislike from surf clothing companies. Wanting to have more people on surfboards clogging up the breaks. Exactly the opposite, I believe, of what most surfers want.
Please be advised--I for one will purchase zero from your site, store ,etc.

That it 7 pounds hell I've caught 3 bass in 4 casts one time true story during mating season. 5pound 6 pound and 3pound you need at least 8-9 to put on the wall.
