I thought you were inferring beginners. Even so, given lesser volume the sb would still require more fine motor skill and balance than a lb. I will concede that an lb is harder to turn but the sb is hard to stay on.
So much closed mindedness in this thread it's not even funny. Dudes, why limit yourself to only one type of board? Be it a Shortboard, Funboard Longboard, Sponge or SUP. Look, I realize everybody has a preference. Shoot, i'd rather be riding my shortest board on perfect waves every day but the reality is it isn't perfect but a handful of days per year. Having a quiver that allows you to use a different tool for the job depending on conditions is 100% the way to go and I feel those who do this are probably the best, most well rounded surfers there are. That's my opinion of course. Why would you want to be a one trick pony? I would much rather pull up to a spot, check the waves, go back to my vehicle and grab the proper board that will enable me to have the most fun that day. If it's 2ft, mushy and slow, i'm not grabbing my 6'4", i'm grabbing my 8'1" or 9". If it's 3-4ft, punchy or dumpy, i'm grabbing my 6'4". It's that simple. None of my boards are cooler than the other, they all have a purpose, just like every tool in your tool box (if you have one) has a purpose. You don't always use the same one tool no matter what the job is do you? Do you use a screw driver when you really need a hammer? Do you use a wrench when what you really need is a knife? Think about it dudes, use your brains. I know I've said it before, and I'll say it again, my surfing took off when I added more types of boards to my quiver. I started on a HPSB, so I can speak from experience. Having a longer board to compliment the short board will do wonders for you. Not trying to convert anybody, just giving some perspective. Moral of the story, don't limit yourself by having a closed mind, not only in surfing, but in life.
I surf on everything except a SUP cause thats for wankers I was surfing a marginal waist-chest high day at a softer spot and I thought, man, this is sooooo easy on a longboard. if I felt like trying to rip, I could have taken a fish out, but my wave count and stoke were increased with ease because I took out a piece of equipment that acted like a crutch. it would have been much MORE effort to shortboard/fish
Nope, I like making money. I do what I have to do in order to make tha skrilla. Don't be jealous of my egg.
Agreed for the most part, many a wanker are found on SUP's, have had my own issues with these wankers. I don't see any board as a crutch though, it's just what works better in those conditions. A short board works better in really big steep dumpy waves, sure you can always LB it, but a short board will almost certainly work better, doesn't make the short board a crutch. Feel me?
thats a nice little bum there gaff, how familiar are you with it?, to bad she is in granny panties and not a proper Brazilian cut
Last head high clean day I was out there was a guy tearin it up on a long board. I mean he was making crazy drops on this thing that was as straight as a 2"by 4". Very cool! and impressive. It takes skill to ride with style any kind of board.
haha sounds like a kook that cant master the art of logging to me. its okay bro someday you will get good at it. i know its embarrassing when us from the south log better than someone that lives in hawaii...really lowers your street cred but thats okay man. keep trying dont give up!
u know a lot of great surfers started out as pro longboarders.the late sion milosky who drowned at mavs was a longboard champion.theres another guy too, cant recall his name.dont hate the player, hate the game
I posted this video awhile ago in another lb vs sb thread. I'm not going to get into it with you guys, pointless. I agree that airs on a lb are not cool but everything else this guy does is awesome. Sick barrels at the end. Enjoy
Thats the great thing about surfing there is many styles and each is totally different.. Me personally I think riding a Longboard like its a shortboard looks awkward to me . Riding a traditional style log is almost a art for like other styles of surfing. Know where to be on the board depending on where you are at on the wave takes years of practice. Stall on the tail to late and the wave passes you by , go to the nose too soon and you nosedive . Don't let all that crap Tudor preaches about being humble and everything fool you He's a arrogant prick in real life
Opinions can be pretty funny. I am 42 yrs old wrangling a job, family, bills, taxes, problems, stress. When I get the rare free moments I go out and surf - simply because I enjoy it. Doesn't matter what I ride just want to have fun. That's it -nothing more and nothing less.
SUP, I rode every one of those except the SUP and bailed on the longer stuff because I just didn't like that kind of ride. Like Matt loves the glide, I like being aggressive on the wave and moving around a lot. Ive found that with enough skill, you can ride pretty much anything down to knee high on a fish (shortboard) and if its smaller, Id rather grab the DH bike and head west to the lifts.
People who longboard like that make me insane!!! Tudor said it best 'if you wana watch bad shortboarding'
longboarding takes skills just as well as shortboarding . Without the trials and errors of longboarding , short boards would not exist . So if you can RIP a long board on a small day , most likely you can ride a short board on a bigger wave .
just read an article in the surfers journal about herbie fletcher. apparently he brought back the longboard. he busted up his leg real bad in a car accident and when he began surfing again he wasn't getting waves so he shaped a long board. says that people hadn't ridden them in the decade before. he started to do the side slip becuase his leg couldn't handle the cut back. when he started selling the board the motto was " bringing the fun back" point is ride whatever you want, any way you can and have fun. just don't be a douche.
