GD ticks. Havent seen one in over a decade. Last night was one of my buddies birthdays. His brother was in town from Boston. We grilled up some steaks in the backyard, which is a wooded/palm forest kinda deal. Puffing on some cigars, drinking on some whiskey. Right before we go in, my friend's brother notices like 2 deer ticks. One on his arm, one on his leg, then another one when we got inside. My black lab was outside, laying on the ground the whole time too. Did my best to check his fur, but it was super thick and the ticks were super small.... The whole time we were out there talking about camping, messing with my wife because she is afraid of any kind of bug. We brushed off spiders and every other critter that we saw... But damnit, I didn't even know we had ticks like that on the island... Quite the buzz kill.... *&^&in ticks. What is this 1994 or some sh*(? Anyway, I hope nothing comes of it. We all checked ourselves pretty thoroughly.
I hate ticks, saw a bunch the first few warm days we had up hear. Is your dog vaccinated for Lyme's disease? As far as humans, you have 24 hrs to get the tick out before you can get it. But I hate ticks too.
I would have to ask the wife about his vaccinations. She was a vet tech for a few years. I know when we got him in San Diego, we got him all the routines vaccines and stuff, but I would be lying if I said yes or no to that one. I will ask her tonight for sure. My wife freaked out a couple months ago, cause she took our daughter out to some huge daisy patch with her cousin and her kids and my wife found two ticks on her when they were leaving. I mean, she did a full on inspection and made sure she got them all, but I was not thrilled when I got home and she told me that... I don't know if there are no ticks in CA, but there were ZERO bugs of any kind, so its been over a decade since I even thought about it. Before the tick thing, we were actually having a discussion about South Carolina and I was joking about the fact that we have pretty much every natural predator around here that you wouldn't want to encounter. Gators. Sharks. Copperheads, Rattles, Diamondbacks, Black Widows, Brown Recluse and so on and so on. I had left ticks off the damn list. Me and my brother had tons of wilderness training when we were kids, but man, I need a refresher course.
I've even seen them on the random 40+ days we occassionally get up here in the winter, provided there's no snow on the ground.
Lots of ticks in Delaware. If my dog goes in the woods, she gets them all over. I had a bad bite last year. Not much to do really if you notice a bite, just be aware if you start to feel sick and lethargic soon after the bite. If so, you'll need to get on a heavy dose of antibiotics to kill lymes disease.
Yeah, PA is loaded with them too. I had the little critters all over me after I field dressed both deer I shot this year. And the second one was in December. Took the family to Gettysburg last Summer and the boys went running through a field below Little Round Top. When they came out, they were covered. Never been bitten though my wife has. She had to go on crazy anti-biotics like Micah was saying.
Have you had any health issues with your dog after such encounters? My lab is from the streets of SoCal. He had never seen a bug in his life. He also thinks the world is ending when it rains. And god forbid there is thunder. Nothing like holding a 100 pound dog in your arms like a child.
I hear they don't like fire. If you can't get them out of your skin, just set yourself ablaze and that should kill THEM. BUAHAHAHA
Nice. We did roast them all with lighters when we identified them. We at least did that correctly. Hopefully I didn't melt the top of my Blu Ray player in the man cave. Had some scotch. Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Good work! Blu Ray player should be ok, just check it for lime disease before playing your next movie, or else you might give it two thumbs down.
NJ is loaded with them. My wive's cousin was hospitalized for a few days last week with Spotted Rocky Mountain Fever compliments of a tick bite. Fever on and off up around 104. We pulled a deer tickoff our 1 year old daughter last year, luckily in the first 24 hours. I had the pleasure of having a wood tick bite into my nutsack. Freaked me the !@$# out! My roommate and my wife (then girlfriend) seemed to think it was hilarious watching me freak out trying to figure out how to remove the thing. Especially when I burnt my sack with a cigrette trying to get him to let go.
Yeah, we used to give him frontline in CA because fleas would get really bad out there. He actually got immune to it at one point so we switched to the other brand. One is water proof, one isn't don't remember which. But yeah, I think we should get him some now. It's crazy though. We have seen ZERO fleas and I have never seen a tick down here either. We lived here through the entire year last year, so it's just surprising to see them all of the sudden. 94 degrees outside today... Uhhhh.
^^^^Word...was talking to a dude in the woods the other day who swears by k-9 advantix or however it's spelled. whoa, holy timing...didn't quote it but this was in response to LBCrew's post.
I was convinced that MIS was an alien last week when he did that to me. It looked like he responded to a post before I actually posted it. I think it's because I did a quick edit, and it dropped back down to the bottom, but it was creepy. I was like dude, are you reading my mind from a far away land.
F'n hilarious right!? I'm outta here this time so you fellers have a great weekend, and to the dudes on here who served, Thank You.
