I like you tube. I don't use the other stuff. But I don't care if people use it. Do what you want. Whatever floats your boat. Just keep it off my wave.
I don't follow any vloggers but because I've watched a couple, my you tube home page is filled with their videos. I have found the fast forward button is key, (just like in porn) I don't care to watch their daily lives but will check out their sessions if they look sick (no more waist high waves, river waves, crappy novelty waves, boring). I watched a Brett Barley vlog a few weeks ago during one of the noreasters that was a sick barrel fest. Not sure how I feel about the "like"option now on SI. I feel it taps into that whole social "reward" psychology bs that fakebook tapped into, also wondering if there is an algoritham attatched to it that will soon be sending me ads on my tastes, and where that info goes. AI is pretty damn scary if you really research it. It seems to be snowballing so fast without the general public having any clue. And all because someone wanted to play chess on a computer.
I too watch the vlog daily. No shame either. I like gravy and he frequently provides good content. When I’m not surfing it’s cool to watch one of our local guys get some. He’s just a regular dude to me. If the vlog that day isn’t exciting I’ll multitask or do other things. I also follow a few YouTube surf-filmers who frequently put out really good content, some of which include: Jeff Chavola Man of Water Dans Surf Videos P.s. I only watch the man of water vids when he shoots in 3rd person. The GoPro shots don’t entice me. As someone mentioned, Brett Barley just got on the scene too and his stuff has been sick. I will have to second LBcrews and Bubs advice on this topic. Everything in moderation is key. Social media is dominating and it is here to stay. This forum is social media. And I know I’ll continue to use it. But, overindulgence or reliance on too much of anything can be harmful, except surfborting.
Willburne makes a good point. I'm also 28 like bubs. I grew up on cassettes and then cds.... just like you 9 years my elder. Not much changed in those 9 years. Nowa says things are changing every 6months. Also as DP stated, this is the only form of social media i partake in. But here's my thoughts on that. This isn't social media. This is a community. We have actual conversations. Where as social media is a look at me fest. Or extremely fake. I did have a Facebook when it first came out for maybe a year. I didn't talk to friends on it. I see them and talk. It was random people who don't care about me who'd post or comment or whatever. And i don't care about them. Extremely fake sense of "friendship". And something else that popped into my head while reading the past few pages.... I said it before, I'm not a fan of Ben gravy. I'll watch his vids from time to time during swell events just to see the surf footage. I don't care about him drinking coffee and mailing crap. Brett barley.....i just saw his vlog during the riley swell. THATS how it should be done. Surfing. Pure and simple. No extra crap. Just him trying to get the best waves he can. Gravy, he's a good surfer and all but damn. He was down in Florida and could of gotten some epic waves. I only saw him surf one excellent day. The rest was crap and novelty. I gotta imagine the majority of his fans are surfers who want to see surfing. Long story short. He's doing it wrong. Brett is doing it right. I enjoyed the 2 or 3 vlogs from him. Much better waves and surfing.
Actually I'd like to share something else. I was bored at work driving and threw on a podcast. The dude who used to do "shred show" on YouTube. Going over all different sorts of boards. Well he was talking with Kelly Slater. They were talking about slater's interactions with fans or whatever. Kelly basically said after a heat or just out and about he'd get people running up tohim just to take a picture real fast then leave. No human interaction. Just a quick picture so they can throw it up on social media and say something like "i met Kelly Slater". Well Kelly basically said that those people didn't really MEET him. And he will never remember them. But the few people or fans who actually say hi and maybe have an actual human interaction with, he tends to remember them. Those are the people that meet him. Just thought it was funny. His comments portray the world of social media perfectly. You meet your "idol" and instead of talking you just grab a quick picture to show your fake online friends
You raise good points bass, but I gotta disagree on some aspects. I agree that some social media communities have gotten out of control, but again it’s completely up to the user to pick and choose what they see, who they interact with, what they upload, how often they use it, etc. You can have a FB or instagram or Snapchat or whatever and just be in contact with family or close friends. I love to throw up a cool shot or vid on my gram, but only the people I would ever care to share it with have access. Also, I personally like watching gravy because he’s relateable to me - at least surf wise and just being an average guy. He ain’t a perfect character, nor is he a perfect surfer. There’s no shot in hell I’ll ever attain skills to be a Brett Barley, but I might get closer to a gravy. He also does daily uploads and Brett so far has done one every week or every other week. When you have more time to compile your footy and a top notch photog always at your fingertips (Jeffery O’Neil) you get better quality, but it isn’t daily footage which is what I like to see. For now I enjoy watching both vlogs, among a lot of other really good content that I’m constantly finding.
Your not wrong kan. I was generalizing about social media. There's definitely a way of doing it like you mentioned. I just feel the majority don't do it that way. Your not wrong about gravy either. And that's one reason why i do check his surf footage. I wasn't hating on him for not being on Bretts level. But like i said, i personally just watchfor the surf footage. When there's no waves I'm not interested in gravys vids. I actually found gravy by watching his "road to nowhere" videos. At least i think that's what he called them. Surf trips. Bretts videos sorta remind me of those now that i think of it.
No doubt, bro. A lot of what you said holds a lot of truth. I think there are lot of people who have what I would call bad “social media hygiene”, unfortunately. Especially younger kids. It has become not just a tool, but a necessity in life which is just wrong to me. P.s. If you are looking for good short surf flix ,check out those names I mentioned above if you haven’t already. Chavolla has some real quality vids on YouTube - “Pacific Dreams” and the “Our Winter Winter Narrative” series. Good quality footy.
Yeah man! I actually just saw the winter narrative series recently. It's good stuff! Going to have to check some of the others out
Agreed. I deactivated Facebook. Nothing worth anything on there anyways and next is instagram. I will go surf somewhere in ok conditions and then I see someone posting the same spot while I was out claiming it was epic. It’s all people looking for attention. Look how awesome I am mentalility.
