Pancreatic cancer is BAD news. I knew a dude who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at 42, two weeks after he got married. He was dead in two weeks.

Hey nobody is perfect. How do u think miki travled the world and was wanted by the FBI at one time for a on going credit card fruad investigation. Back then it took alot longer to find out you execpted a bad credit card. That why Miki got way with it for so long. He used people to get what he wanted and only trusted a few with know the real miki .

Paddling out into a line up with 100 people would definitely make me a little hostile towards others, but that's not what I see around here. Most of the problems that I have encountered in my 20 years of surfing has been just a few guys who think that if they can catch the wave, then they deserve it. There's no need to paddle around a guy who is already in position, or paddle your 13' SUP from 30 yds. out past the long boarders and take every wave.

I agree that surfing isn't a group hug, but it doesn't need to be uncivil either.

I remember watching the old videos of Miki thinking it would be cool to live like him. Then years later, after reading about how he conducted his life, I realized that he was not someone who should be respected at all. He was just an awesome surfer. That's it.

I prefer to think of him as infamous rather than legendary. If infamy qualifies one for legendary status, then Dora sleeps with the fishes. . .

Absolutely...... someone's gotta teach them a lesson. I'm sure my etiquette wasn't the best when I started surfing as a wise-a$$ teen..... I remember getting cussed and threatened for ditching my board once, never did it again.

There's this guy around here that thinks he's cool. He used to longboard now he SUPs. He paddles around, calls people off from outside, talks a lot of s**t. He's been out of control in and out of the water for as long as I can remember. He back paddled me and ran me over from behind on his SUP, then proceeded to tell me to stay out of his way. It was only the two of us out. A few months back he's up to his same old tricks and this guy I met wasnt into it, so they take it to the beach. The SUP guy gets b**ch slaped to the ground. That's what it takes. Its not a lesson in ettiquette these people need its a lesson in life. Give it to them, repeatedly if nessesary, its the right thing to do. Deep down you all know it, they know it, give it to them and make the world a better place for all of us.

Oh yea Dora was a great surfer and could have been a better surfer but had a serious streak of immaturity. He refused to take responsibilty for his piss poor desisions and made a lot of excusses. He was just bigger than most so never got the back to reality beat down that some people need.

Surfer 666 tells it the way it should be done. I SUP and Surf and have been in the water since I was a kid 39 years ago. People ned to have respect on what ever craft they are on. If it takes a verbal ripping then give it to them if you have to stack up on them to get the hint then do it SUP or surf.

I was out as the only SUP in a break with about 30 surfers trying to push it in the storm surf and we had a great time.
waves for everyone and no hassles.

Man up give the jerks a piece of your mind and put them in their place.

A point some of you are missing here about Dora is that he didn't care if you thought he was uncivil or a jerk. He didn't care about what you believed was surfing etiquette. He surfed for himself. He was not a part of a group. Everyone has their own ideas about Dora and "Dora Stories". I kinda saw Dora as the anti-hero of surfing. He was a dark but necessary force in a long era of surfing where it was made to be cookie cut and vomited out to the masses (Beach Boys, Gidget). But at the same time, Dora bit the hand that fed. He would speak out publicly about the demise of surfing's glory days but at the same time, he was in the beach blanket bingo movies getting paid. Some would call this hypocritical, but I think Dora was just using everyone for his own personal gain. To enjoy his freedom, surfing perfect waves, and live an adventure filled life. There arn't enough non-conformists in the surfing world today, and I have to admit I am part of the masses that Dora most likely would have hated. But like Dora, I worry where the future of surfing is headed. The crowds, the packaged and sold image (look at where the next big ASP contest is held), the blogs and videos that some of these surfers are calling "art". This summer it made me all so sick that I had to quit working at a surf camp that I occasionally give lessons at. I couldn't be a part of destroying one of the only things I truly love. I couldn't create any more clones.

Dora was harsh but sometimes you need someone that is willing to be harsh and behave the way I think we all feel. At least he was willing to show it rather than smile politely while cursing under his breath. I'm not saying I am outspoken but sometimes I respect those who are. As a kid I surfed with a bunch of "Dora's" . From the outside or a modern parents point of view it was harsh. I was yelled at, pushed, called a kook etc. You had to really want it if you were going to survive and catch some waves. Being kinda quiet and more timid than I should be for my size I dealt with it the best I could. I surfed down the beach from the "Locals" and learned to surf. Eventually they noticed that the kid they used to mess with was surfing better and was very respectfull and invited me over, albeit last in line, to surf the main break. If there were a few more Dora's around the undedicated would leave the game fast, today it's too easy to casually surf since knowone enforces rules. Everyone who can afford a board thinks that every wave is equally theirs as it is a person who surfs a spot everyday. I moved to my current home 10 years ago and it has taken me 10 years to be recognized enough that at least I don't get hassled by the other guys who have frequented my home break for a long time. Like reliving my childhood they know me as a polite respectfull guy who surfs halfway decent and understands the rules and etiquette of the water.

Nice post. It seems that each year winter on the east coast becomes more solidly my 'safe place'. The pretenders go home and those left are the ones who really love being out there and are okay playing by the rules. As much as I love the summer weather, the vibe just sucks. I paddled out a few days ago, one of the only times since May, and I was pretty astonished at how many people were out there. It didn't take long to realize 80% (at least!) of them didn't have a f'/n clue what they were doing, and suddenly the whole thing made more sense. "Soul Surfer" groupies I suppose. I have nothing but respect for Bethany Hamilton, but I do think it's painfully ironic that her 'soul' flick has caused so many traffic jams in the lineup as of late.

I'm trying to think of the long trail of Hollywood/So-Cal surfing whore-dom that has polluted our waters. Would love to hear additions, but here's the tale as I see it:
    Gidget
    Frankie Avalon
    Jan and Dean
The Beach Boys (I do love the music, but they sure didn't help much)
    Blue Crush
    MTV "boarding house"
Nike 6.0, whatever the hell that even means
    Hollister
    SUP (just in general)
    Soul Surfer
