With DP-SUP on well-deserved surfing vacay to Fiji (ok, I made the Fiji part up but I hope he is surfing today), I figured I'd slide in & report a couple of things that I think he would also see fit to print here on The Forume.

    Summer is officially here.

Had hoped the shark attack news would've kept the swimmers and soakers out of the ocean today, but it was too much to hope for.

Yank, I saw the 13 year old news and the gorilla, I hadn't seen the CA one. AS far as the gorilla, I understand they were looking out for the welfare of the child and needed a quick response to the situation, but in my personal opinion, I think something else could have been done. I know time was of the essence, but kill it?! And yes, I think the parents should be charged! The mother said she looked away for a second... Don't believe that!

I thought this was going to be another archy psyco-paranoia thread. Thank goodness it's at least based on real world events, even if IDGAF about any of it.

I think if one of my kids fell into the Ape pit I would jump in. Waiting for the professionals may be the right thing to do, I'd be dead soon after the jump, but I'd jump. Gut reaction. How the hell did everyone just sit and watch?

Instincts should be to save your kid, seems normal to do that. I don't have any children (yet) but I think I'd probably end up doing the same as you. Then again, maybe the Gorilla would be gentle as they know it's a child. Never know, they are really intelligent, so maybe jumping in could spook the gorilla into doing something they may not have otherwise. Hard decision. It's a shame they killed it, I wonder if a tranquilizer would of been the better option? He didn't hurt the boy from what I can tell. If anything, it seemed he was trying to protect him from the humans freaking out. I believe if the gorilla wanted to harm the boy, he would have.

The problem with tranquilizers is that certain animal species will go a bit nuts as they try to fight off the onset of drug effects--they do not understand it. Anger often emerges.
This one is was a tough call, for the police and zoo personnel, I am sure.
As I write this, I still do not know what my call would have been. Kill or tranquilize?? But I suppose the child's life needed to be the priority!

Yeah, not sure how quickly the tranquilizer kicks in and knocks em out. I wonder if there is a tranquilizer that exists that could stun the animal immediately and let the drug do it's thing? If not, maybe that's something they can develop for future situations. You're right though, if it doesn't kick in fast enough they might freak out and go nuts.

The fact a child can get into a gorilla enclosure is insane. At the SD Zoo, It is impossible to get into the tiger or gorilla cages - Glass partitions. Well, actually, if you jump out of the "skyride" you could land in the gorilla enclosure. Doubt you would survive the drop...maybe 100-200'

It had to be done (Gorilla). Just the way it was dragging the kid around like a ragdoll was enough of a risk of the kid's life. Not sure what you do to the parents. What do you guys think should happen? Jail? Fine?

I don't think Jail (send both parents to jail and put the kid to the state?). Fine....how much?

sometimes kids just get away from you. I've had some scares, not kid in the ape pit scares i grant you, and they've been my fault.

maybe just an investigation from family services first. see if are fit parents that just had an incident. They took the kid to the zoo for Pete's sake they can't be all bad.

Zoos are some of humanity's worst creations.

A three year-old should be in a stroller at a zoo and these parents are dumb. Junior was probably super stoked on gorillas and probably made a run for it. I feel like it would be so easy to lose track of your kid in that kind of setting with so many other people around.

This zoo should be held somewhat responsible for how this kid could so easily arrive in that situation.

That gorilla was probably more intelligent than the onlookers gawking at him. There's a ton of momentum right now for getting orcas out of display settings at parks and apes should be treated the same way.

my two year old would tear her arms out trying to get out of a stroller at the zoo. When you take your kids to the zoo it's like taking your kids to the beach. You are there for them not you. your job is to watch them and enjoy their enjoyment. but it's easy to get distracted. they got cool sh!t at the zoo.

Agree that the primates shouldn't be in Zoo's. They know they are captives.
