you needs something more rigid. they make (or used to make) foam fin protectors that slid over glass ons. if you cant find them use cardboard. cut it so it sticks out half an inch above the fin and duct tape them on. that was if the board lands fins down. that cardboard will eat the impact not the fin.

I cut slits into blocks of Styrofoam or any EPS packing foam and slide it over the fins (nose too). You can get it for free at any store that sells appliances, TVs, and large electronic equipment. The cardboard boxes that bicycle shops receive are nice and thick and I usually add padding around the nose and rails (with bubble wrap or clothing/towels between the cardboard and board) -- even inside a board bag.

me too. I used the packing from tvs and computers. and pool noodles for the rails.

Great idea, do you cut them in half and put them around? I made a board rack with that method.

when I'd go to CR,I'd press it down over the fins and trim it to fit my board bag. put the noodle down the rails and fill in the gaps. If the wifey was going, I'd put her life vest(she can't swim) on the deck. I'd always have a couple tarps on the way down to protect the bottom. On the way back, all the stinky clothes went with the board, the luggage was filled with coffee and Guaro.

What I usually do before a surf trip is go dumpster diving behind the furniture stores, appliance stores etc... anywhere you think the throw away cardboard and foam.

You can find yourself a good chunk of foam and like the other poster said just cut some slits in it or find a couple of thick blocks of foam you can put in between and around.

They actually make a foam fin block you can buy but it pretty much does the same as finding some scraps in a dumpster.

Another great find when dumpster diving is bubble wrap.

Also a great cheap trick is to take those foam pool noodles you use for swimming and cut a slit all the way down so that you can open them like a hot dog bun..... then you put one on each side of the rails of your board. Put some foam on your deck and the bottom of your board then wrap with duct tape all the way around so it holds the foam on the rails.

Once you get to your destination carefully remove all of it and try to save it for your return home. Either that or sell your board and avoid the costly airfare for your board. Hell for what you have to pay for board baggage you can damn near buy another board!

Use styrofoam around the fins and id also wrap towels around the tail on top of the styrofoam. Maybe even pack some of your clothes that your bringing for extra cushion, it can save on bag fees too haha
