Troncones Mexico

No cartels might get ya

 

Well I have been in that area of Mexico a few times and never had any problems but was warned in the airport by the car rental agency not to drive off into the mountains from the 200 in the state of Guerrero. There are some really nice places to stay in Troncones as well as some great places to eat.

If you snorkel you can get those lobsters without the claws just offshore.

The waves there were not very hollow so I didn't stay long and it needs a pretty solid swell to work. There are other options nearby, one being a very long and perfect left about a half hour up the coast, again its not hollow. Depends what kind of waves you desire.

I have been to mexico too many times to count and never had any serious issues, or anything stolen for that matter. In general people there were very helpful. My wife and I drove there just a few years back. It would probably be a great trip. The one thing that hit me the hardest the first time I went was the poverty, they don't hide it in Mexico, they can't. Also its HOT as $%#@!!!

I was there 5 years ago, was a great time. Troncones is bare bones but a good time. Do the Wife and teenagers surf? If not there isn't much to do aside from sit on the beach. I assume the ad you saw was for the Inn at Manzinillo bay? They are in front of Troncones Point. (beware, there are lots of sea urchins on the bottom). The beach break in Troncones when big is not for beginners and closes out quite a bit, but would be good for beginners in smaller waves.

5 years ago there was a series of shark attacks over a 4 week period, I think three attacks. The pacific coast of Mexico had not had a shark attack in 38 year prior to this and to my knowledge has not had one since. I would not worry about it.

 

You might want to think about Sayulita. IMO its a much nicer and less middle of nowhere place than Troncones. It has a lonboard right point in front and if you have a car you can swing over to Burros where you can ride a shortboard or log and have fun. There is actually a really nice hotel right in front of the break at burros called la palladium. Also, you and the fam could take a day trip to PV one day which is a super fun city.

 

Yes its chill and secluded. There are two left points in Troncones that are rocky, and a few beachies which would be great beginner waves when small. That left a half hour up the way would be good also as you can paddle out real easy and work your way into the line up. Also if you stay at the Inn at Manzanillo Bay the owner had a boat when I was there and did trips to hard to get to spots, one called the Ranch which looked good from his pictures, peeling right and left rivermouth, sand bottom. There are many options in the area.

 

been there, hated it. Troncones, itself, is a nasty, heavy beach break that, imo, is for advanced surfers or boogie boarders. The spitting barrels look great from the beach and in photos, but it's a board breaking beast.

I stayed at the manzanillo inn. Great little inn with gourmet food, but the point break out front is overrated. If there's a solid south swell, you can catch the waves way aroun the point, giving a world class long ride...but, on an an average or small day, the waves is mushy. Once again, looks great in photos, but you're more than likely to get skunked. There's also a giant, nasty boulder poking up about a foot below the surface near the point.

do not drink or eat any food around there other than what you clean/cook or the food at the inn. Almost everyone I met where horribly sick for days from eating the local restaurant food.

only thing worth traveling to that area is playa saladita and a few spots north (most of which are boat access only)...but they're actually a bit of a sketchy drive. There's much better surf destinations in mex, so I wouldn't go back. If you insist on going, bring a longboard.
