Wahine and I are about to get a mad rad fifth wheel. Portable house we can pull up to nearly any break out west and trow a party. Need a 3/4 ton or 1 ton to yank it with though. Love my 1/2 ton but the fifth wheel weighs 11k lbs fully loaded. Definitely going turbo diesel for the muscle, fuel econ, and performance at altitude. I'm a Ford guy for life but their diesels just haven't been reasonable at the pump (or mechanic) since the 7.3 PS a few years back. The Duramax is great, especially with an Allison transmission, but early to mid-2000s Chevys are God-awful looking and suspect in certain powertrain aspects. Really leaning towards a 5.9 Cummins and am willing to drive a Dodge as a result. The best would be going with the 6.7 with all the emissions deletes, but this will be a rig that may soon have CA tags on it and I don't feel like swapping it back to stock every second year for a sticker. Any of you CATS have experience with diesels? Please offer up your thoughts. Even if you've towed with a gasser, let's hear it.
Sup' bud? Based on the author/topic I thought the automatic answer would be "C7". But you're talking real trucks. Nothing to add, but I'm interested in what this tread reveals... one day I'll be in a similar market. Be well.
Emasszzsszz! You hitched up to that wahine girlie yet? I can see it now... The maternity ward... The room with all the newborns in little cribs... One of 'em is huggin a Carver...
Man, the weight of the 5th wheel pretty much demands the torque of the diesel. That is a big ole' load to be dragging cross country and over mountain passes. No other choices, really. Could go with an older big block gas but unlikely to find any worth a crap. Rarely see 8.1 GMs or a 460 Ford gassers any more even remotely late model. Do they still even make them? My buddy has an '05 6 liter GM diesel with the Ally trans with 250 plus on the odometer and it seems that the diesel longblock may last a really long time but everything attached to them breaks just like a gas motor- cooling system, fuel pumps, powersteering and whatever on & on. Expensive to repair always. Why the big ass trailer? Maybe an under 20' Airstream or comparable ? Towed by a 6 liter GM gas 3/4 ton, it might be an option. Or a 1 ton GM van & the Bambi Airstream, that is what I think I'm gunning for. Scored a '95 Chevy G30 van with a 1st gen 350 and a 4L80 trans with that in mind. And for what it is worth, any of the Detroit 3 makes as good a product as the other.
The size of your truck depends on the size of your chica, E. Just kiddin! Although we always say, the higher the jacked-up truck the littler the man is who jumps down from behind the wheel. You got married? Why, dude?? Ah, never mind ..... good luck with your adventures!
Toyota tundra or a Nissan ?/whatever theyr called...oh yea Nissan titan.big azz truck.u don't want no f150,get a heavy duty rig,put a winch on the front and u can ride through any terrain
