There is usual protocol when firing someone in this type of role (CIA, FBI, NSA). You usually need a trail in writing from the DOJ which is most likely why he waited. The problem is that the democrats were constantly delaying and blocking appointees. When the deputy was finally appointed, then he suggested Comey be removed and it was all for legitimate purposes. Comey is a complete failure and caused the FBI to lose all credibility with the public. I do see problems in certain areas of how Trump is governing but this is not one of them. He had every right legally to fire Comey and it was the right decision. Especially since new evidence has come out showing that Comey already made up his mind that he wouldn't prosecute Hillary even before a trial began. That is because there were democrats emailing the DOJ to not prosecute and Comey knew they weren't going to prosecute. Comey then just followed the master Obama's DOJ orders to not prosecute instead of growing a sac and putting Clinton in jail.
