What I think is everybody needs to do is stop messing with the foundation of this Country and leave things be that don't need changed, like the voting age, the electoral college, voting districts, etc., leave those things be. The more we flirt with these ideas, the more likely it is that these things will change, and if that happens you destroy the foundation of our Country and allow for some real damage to be done by people who have no business being in power and before you know it it all comes crumbling down.
I'd be happy with making people pass a civics exam in order to vote. To show they have an understanding of the Bill of Rights, Amendments, and the roles of the Houses, SC, etc. Hell that would knock out 3/4 of the voters, and most of the officials
How about this? to have the privilege of voting you should be able to define the differences between the parties or at least know what the party stands for ?
Every candidate is assigned a number and puts out a one page position paper of what they believe in and what they hope to accomplish. People then have a few days then vote for tha number. No crazy long campaigns or parties or identity politics.
Just move Congress to 6-month sessions. The other 6 months those asshats have to actually work in a job back in their home districts.
I "liked" your comment for the part about "No crazy long campaigns or parties or identity politics". The first part needs some work but I get your point.
I prefer every person that runs for government gives name and address. Then we destroy them. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
The only thing I believe we can do to improve the process, as well as the competency of the voting body, is to mandate voter registration and display the requisite identification at the polling stations. So tired of hearing all the excuses for people who absolutely refuse to use or obtain identification to vote. Even when it's offered for free. Don't want to identify yourself? Don't vote. It's that simple. Doing this would improve the integrity our our system, and ensure a level of voter competence. Any other suggestions seem like stifling votes along party lines
Those that say they want no ID are hiding something; no exceptions. Those that say they cannot find or get to office to register for ID, never have a problem finding or getting to Welfare and Food Stamp offices.
I read a good, seemingly neutral, well researched article on voter ID laws, which I can not find now, but basically the article concluded it's a wash. In that, Voter ID laws don't decrease the minority vote as conservatives had hoped, and the lack of ID laws don't encourage more minority votes as liberals believed. Also, the number of cases of actual voter fraud is incredibly tiny. It's basically a non-issue, but personally I see no problem in presenting a valid ID at the voting booth, which in fact I do here in NH.
Yeah, but it is so much fun for us to start fights, arguments, class warfare, racial hate, etc with it. I like it!!
