Well since the forums are becoming a place for all kinds of questions, I thought I'd contribute my own, semi-surf related plea for help. I've got turf toe, it came on about 3 months ago after a game of soccer. I don't remember any specific time while playing where I injured it, it was just sore after, and the next day was very painful. I didn't know what it was at the time and just treated it like any other injury; push through and wait for it to go away. Well now that I'm in my mid-20's, that doesn't work so much anymore. It's lingered for these 3 months, has come and gone a bit, but mostly stayed in some way. I guess you could say I've probably reinjured and irritated it off and on since then. I was rehabbing a back injury from surfing for all of the month of May into early June. Was out of the water, out of the gym, out of any sports. And I ignored the toe, assuming it would just go away with that long period of rest. Well my first session back was when TS Andrea came through. My concern was my back, which did ok, but I can't say as much for my toe. About midway through I noticed it really hurting, and then it clicked, jamming my foot/big toe into my board coming up out of a duck dive was hurting it. And I'm sure the pop-up/landing on the board isn't the most friendly to a bad big toe either. Since then it's been bad again; can't walk normally, hurts to bend the toe upwards. I'm icing and heating it regularly, my podiatrist gave me some prescription anti-inflammatory which doesn't really seem to be helping. I've been riding my longboard since because I don't have to dive it, and the waves are pretty small anyways. Other than that, I've been trying to take it easy on the toe. It's not getting better, and I don't want to keep fighting this thing and have it become chronic. Maybe I'll have to take another month out of the water to fully rest it. July would probably be the best month out of the year for that. I know some of yall have had turf toe, any insights? What worked, what didn't? I was watching this youtube video where this Dr was saying that it can be caused by bones of the foot being out of alignment, and is an easy fix to realign them. Idk. Thanks for reading my pity-party post
I have no idea what turf toe is and I used to play a doctor on TV. It seems as you are getting injured alot. Maybe you should become an "indoor kid." And man, your body isn't supposed to racked be with injury and unable to heal in your mid-twenties. Forget the inflammatory pills and ax your podiatrist to give you some real pills. Opiate pills. If the back starts to act up again, and the toe hurts you may need fentanyl patches. Be careful with those. I don't know, man. Wouldn't your healthcare professional know more aboot this than the burn-out, alcoholic surfers on this site? Really, all of these dudes drink constantly. It's just a toe, it shouldn't cramp your style too much.
Ok, ok, jeez. I don't think there is much anyone on here can tell you. It's reoccuring, you've tried to give some time to let it heal, and you've been aware and conscious of it. So these guys probably won't be able to offer much advice. Plus, they are all probably surfing, fishing and drinking beer right now. Did you get an x-ray? How much confidence do you have in your current podiatrist? Maybe they aren't that good. Maybe get another opinion. What aboot your footwear? Maybe that is irritating the condition. Loose and cushiony. Get those Sanuk sandal thingamajigs, they are comfortable and loose. I don't know, man. If all else fails just remember those guys stormimg the beach at Normandy fighting Jerry, and fight through the pain. I mean toe pain has to be an ailment that is more easily ignored.
