Wow... Not sure how I missed this. That's a heavy thing to deal with. Must have been great though (finding out you were ok). Talk about a weight off your shoulders... And the fact that it gave you the balls/sense to ditch the chick is great... $300k is a small price to pay for freedom/happiness.

It's never too late (until it is)... If you have the financial freedom to cut bait and live the life you want I say do it. You've worked hard long enough. Go reap the benefits.

Make sure family was taken care of, assets properly transferred to them (no probate), funeral arrangements made (ashes scattered off the coast), move to Florida Gulf coast or Keys, sail and fish.

Yankee & Betty: Glad you're both still with us! My brother in-law in Texas had lung cancer, and it hit hard and fast.

My Dad passed away in March of this year. He was 86. Broke his hip in Jan 2015 and spent the last year-plus of his life in rehab centers, hospitals, and finally a nursing home, gradually wasting away from dementia. It was a nice nursing home, but it was still a nursing home. All the other old folks there were stuck in wheelchairs, lifted into and out of bed, wearing diapers, minds and bodies wasting away... I don't want to go out that way. I guess nobody really does. Seeing all that changes one's perspective.
