it was that socialist school system you were brought up in that taught you the concept of socialism...That's what we call irony

Sorry, but that is an incorrect answer for me... in this instance. But thankfully we have other "socialist institutions" in this country. Like the U.S. military which is the most socialist institution around (it borders on communism!). Free medical care and they tell you where to go; assigned housing or lodging and sometimes housing stipends; free food in the barracks; free recreational facilities; a pension; discounted food and shopping stores; and so on.

There are plenty of jobs in Cambridge, MD, for crab cleaners. They are hurting for help since they can not bring in legal migrant labor (all the quotas have been exceeded).

Start looking for an answer to your problem in the mirror. There are jobs out there, you may have to relocate, or do something beneath your standards for a while. Start a business(if you can afford and find your way around all the red tape) All I'm saying is that government is not the solution. It will fail you in the end, it always does!!! This is the problem with our current socialist leaning politicians and the hoards of people willing to believe in what they are selling. BTW, in my opinion the benifits that go along with military service are the least we should do for the folks that are willing to go into harms way to defend your freedom.

Sorry, Charilie. Today's military is not the same as your daddy's military. It is a whole different game. Back in the days of WWII, Korea and Vietnam, we had something called the draft and indentured service. Military wages and benefits were the pits. Veterans' services were 3rd rate, except for the GI Bill. Today, wages and benefits in the military are more than competitive with the private sector. Enlisting in one of the military services is a real occupational choice and like many things in the free enterprise system you only need balance risk with reward.

And, oh by the way, venturing into Iraq did not defend my freedom. It was a waste of US treasure, time and a huge distraction from the challenge at hand when the nation's resources were reoriented from countering forces of evil in Afghanistan and elsewhere squandering these resources in Iraq. Going to Iraq was akin to opening Pandora's box -- a stupid and naive venture like gambling at the craps table with somebody else's money and investment.

Back to the original thrust of the thread... joining the military is a good option for employment and socialist benefits; cleaning & packing crabs in Cambridge comes with less benefits but it is less risky.

I feel no pain for the individual touting his getting laid off so he can go surf travel for a month instead of looking for another job or getting his unemployment benefits squared away first. Take some personal responsibility - there are consequences to actions. On the other hand, unemployment insurance is earned -- just don't abuse it -- there are many people who really *need* it.

    ???

You cant surf your way around a problem. Sure, everything that hurts us is someone elses fault...or is it? The average job in America last 10 months per individual. I feel one of the most protected places to work right now is the Military or work as a Tradesmen. I am building a house right now. I get paid crap in my job but... The HVAC, Electrician, Carpentar, Plumber and Drywall guys make loop! Go find work. Bang a nail and get dirty. Be your own boss. Complaining and fighting for something is just wasting your short life away. If you like the water then see a coast guard recruiter. And this should be a reminder to all of you that you need to have a back-up plan when you "DO" loose your job. Ask your self, "How will I make money, What will I loose and except it as a fact of when...not if?" Surfing will always be there. It will not mask your problems. Life has to be dealt with first. A wave is the cherry on top!
