finally gave in 380$ isnt a bad price round trip from philly to santa cruz with a layover, website says they charge 150$ each way for surfboards. Wondering if it would be cheaper just to buy one for the month ill be spending and then try and sell it before i leave? Also can a normal skateboard be carried onto the plane, plan on doing alittle skating while im there. Any help would be appreciated. Dont have a solid travel bag, however I have used a longboard day bag and stufffed it to the brim with suits, shirts, towels, bubble wrap, etc.
You'll have better luck selling sand at the beach than boards out in CA. There's a reason I bring back boards to the east that I buy out there on the classifieds about 1 out of every 2 trips I make out west. Does JetBlue do much out of PHL? Only $50 each way and damage has been minimal. You're looking at $300 round trip just for the transport plus potential for significant travel damage on two different segments (more if you connect). That's easily gonna cancel out the value of your board. Just buy one out there for much less on the classifieds. The selection will blow away what you see out here. This. +1 Yes. I take mine on most trips no problem. Plus, you can skate to the terminal if you're in a hurry if the airport has resilient flooring. Backpacks that have skate clips on the outside are great and it's just as easy if you have to take it loose.
United is such a *****. Roundtrip to Hawaii from Toronto is USD$400 for the board alone. Air Canada only charges $50. Fckn bull****
On my last flight, a guy got on my flight with a geetar strapped to his back. they didn't care and found a place for it. tie some stings to your stick and carry on.
That's it. It's decided. I'm relocating to the GTA. What do you think, Missy sound good? Maybe Ajax? Oshawa? How bouts PeeeeBo?? Maybe catch a windswell or two on Lake Ontario in between excursing to BC and NS.
Craigslist is your friend... https://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/spo/4766156985.html https://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/spo/4776701784.html https://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/spo/4803709635.html https://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/spo/4776767330.html https://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/spo/4807322001.html
Airlines prices are absurd right now considering fuel prices have dropped so much. They must be raking in cash
Do the math, sportino. $300 RT or $150 one way, right? You're staying there 30 days, presumably surfing like a possessed gringo goon for most of those days, right? Buy a board on CL for $400, pay the $150, sell it in CR for $200, net outlay $350. Cost per day: $11.66. or Take your board for $300 RT UA fees. Cost per day: $10.00. or Rent a board in CR, usually between $15-20 per day; strike a good deal for week-long rentals & pay the equivalent of $10 per day; advantage here is that you can change out the board for other type boards as the conditions change (and they will change); as well, as much as you think you'll surf every stinkin' day because you are a beastly gringo surfer.....you won't; ergo, the days that you don't surf, go hand the board in & save a few chips. Bring your own leash & bring your own strings if you rent. Rental leash / string are worn out. Downside to renting is that if you break it you own it, usually at inflated prices but you will have no choice but to pay.
I was there in March and the rental situation sucked donkey balls, I checked every shop in the area and it was mostly soft tops and a handful of sh*tty to average boards that were mostly fun shapes that were banged up and a select few actual short boards which were all dogs honestly. I found a half way decent 6'4" at Freeline Surf Shop, it's a short walk to the water from there, can hit The Hook, Pleasure Point, or head up to the Lane by car. I would try buying and selling if you want a good stick but don't wanna bring your own.
Do boards ever get damaged when traveling? I have to go out to SoCal in September and figured I'd just bring my own board
I hope your not serious...ever time I fly my boards get damaged and my only advice is a lot of bubble wrap and try to wrap two boards together to avoid xtra fees.
I've gone OCD on packing them and they've not even got a single spiderweb on budget international flights on Spirit Air. Then I've had them hammered on domestics where I still packed it pretty good. Learned that I should just have a travel board or two (for different conditions/size) designated for such and willing to have them dinged in travel as well as at breaks I'm new to surfing. Working out well that way. If you've got someone you can stash one with at a place you frequent then you're furthering the life of your stick and saving change. Stuck a board out with wahine in SoCal last wkend and now it's there for me on Sunday when I get back. Let's hope she doesn't barter it for a pair of shoes. And C2, what's this about you have to go to SoCal in the fall as if you're being forced to? Lol
