OP, I know I'm late to the party, but it sounds like you really pussed out of that one. You blew it man. It's unfortunate, but sometimes you just have to pick another place to surf if you aren't up for the competition and sometimes confrontation of surfing a popular spot like that... Try looking at from the other perspective, maybe the guy that "burned" you saw you back paddle him around the peak and did it just to put you back in line. Maybe he is sick of you guys surfing his spot and not giving the locals any respect. Then you go talking **** under their breath to your friends about it, mouth off when confrontation starts then you just sit there like a bump on a log? You shouldn't have mouthed off unless your were ready to do something about it. If you didn't want to fight in the water than you should have called him to the beach. You are luckily they didn't just beat you up on general principle.

So what happened after he requested an apology. Did you both keep surfing? Did you and your friends leave? By the way, I'm not judging if you left, just curious if his tactics ultimately worked.

At some point, even if your right, even if you can beat the snot out of him in the parking lot, it won't make the day as fun as it would have been if the incident didn't happen.

I would never tangle with someone in the water if it could be avoided, even if I was pretty certain I would be on the winning side. Such a bad idea on so many levels in my opinion.

Some might argue that having a chance encounter with him 1 on 1 on land might be satisfying. Not endorsing that by any means, and I would like to think I would have the restraint not to do that, but if it went down as you described, I would personally have a hard time letting it go.
