Ezekial Lau from HI is killing it right now. CJ just got the biggest score of the heat. What I would give for 2 foot HB right now. I am serious.

interesting how they can make such hpsb work in such fat/small waves

...CJ was on a quad, btw

Yeah, the take off are easy in any of those waves, but things REALLY get ugly when they have to pump through the reform for 15 seconds. Makes me sad to watch it, but all in all, they are still putting on a great display... If it were 2 feet bigger, reform wouldn't be an issue there.

The scoring blows my mind sometimes. I know they adapt the scoring scale based on the conditions. But for instance, CJ put on a great run of waves, but he was just throwing tight little roundhouses and getting his tail around in the pocket, pumping through the reform and finishing his waves. He won the heat with 7s and 8s, meanwhile, the Hawaiian kid, threw his clean cutties and then went for broke and landed a couple 360 airs. He went huge on one and didn't land, but he got scored a 4 on the ones that he stuck....

I mean, how on earth was that kids wave not more impressive, scoring or otherwise than CJs technical little runs. CJ didn't even try to do anything critical. He just kept it clean.

I don't like the way they are scoring. And then that kid from Japan snuck into 2nd for a minute, and he looked like he could barely even surf....

    ugh to the judges.

Watching Tanner Gudauskas right now. The G brothers are by far some of the most interesting guys to watch on any level of the tour. So far, he is in the lead. Dudes will try things that no one else will in a heat.

Yes they're good. Didn't Pat win this event or another Vans tourney in VB last year which put him in the Hurley? It was fun watching him live at that one. Those boys do good in the slop and some WCT guys can't handle the same.

Yeah, Pat has won a bunch of stuff. He was also the first person to ever land a Rodeo Flip in competition. He did so at Teahupoo of all places. Mind blowing.

Wow. I didn't notice that. He definitely put on good runs, tight in his rail to rail too. Impressive on a quad, it didn't seem like he was getting hung up at all in the pockets. Good to know.

Pretty fun event to watch. Something I was stunned to hear was jordy's bunny chow dims... announcers were trying to get this info and said he painted over them on his backup... when he was finally asked what size he was riding, he sort of tried to keep them to himself but did say that he is riding his shortboard CLOSE TO 3" thick ... Epoxy board with 2 7/8 thickness. Wow.

I shaved 3 inches off my normal shorty and went about a half inch thicker... Took a while to get used to, but in mushy surf it's really fun. No need for the fun shape on "flat" days

i get the whole wider, shorter, thicker movement but was surprised to hear a pro say his board was a stock shorty just with eps, a wider nose, and almost 3 inches thick at small huntington. Always think of pros riding 2 1/4... just got a new board that is a tad thicker (went from 2.5 to 2.625) and under my arm, it feels like a ton more

well, jordy is about 6'3"/190+ lbs, but a 3 inch thick board is just gross. I can't stand the feel of anything much over 2.5"...unless it's hidden by a down/pinched rail.
